How insert a stop into a route without reroute?

I have a route planned, 1000 miles from Dallas to Roswell, NM.
I want to insert gas stops along the route. I locate a gas station on the route, select it and use the "Add to route" function.
The route is now modified to continue 250 miles to the end point and back to the gas station.

Am I using the "Add to Route" function correctly? How can I insert a stop at a specific location along an already planned route?

Just open route properties and reorder the points if it's appearing in the wrong place. When you add something to a route Basecamp has no idea where you want it, so you have to tell it if you've placed it incorrectly. Note if you select a point in route properties and then do an 'add' the point is added just before the selected point.
