Problem seeing topo map from 60Cx in BaseCamp

Hi, I have a Garmin 60Cx loaded with the Australian topo map on a microSD card as "gmapsupp.img". The GPS works fine with the map but when I connect it to BaseCamp the map can't be seen, the basic global map is the only option. Anyone have any idea why? I have rung and emailed Garmin Support several times, the people I have spoken to seem to just read the manual! The unit and map are about 3-4 years old I think, I have just used it as a stand alone device until now. Could it be that the map was an old version for MapSource that BaseCamp has difficulty with? If so, do I need to convert it somehow?

When the unit is connected to my PC as a USB device I can see the gmapsupp.img file, and as I said it works fine on the GPS. I have reinstalled BaseCamp, put the card into another GPS, no difference.

Thanks
  • External drive will not work, i have several external drives on my PC containing map (back ups) in folders called "Garmin" non of them show in BC.

By the way, where did you get the map from? Is it unlocked???

I bought it new with the GPS 3-4 years ago, it was already installed and works fine on the unit so I assume that means it is unlocked?
  • - Download and instal Javawa device manager
    - Connect your 60 to the PC
    - Open Javawa device manager and let it read your GPS and SD card
    - In JDM click on your SD card/Manage Maps
    - Select the topo map
    - Select "Show in Basecamp" top left corner
    - Open Basecamp and enjoy your maps

Thats al, no need to buy a Memory stick

Seriously, you need to stop 'assuming' ...

Just because it works fine on the unit won't tell you if it's unlocked or not, but it doesn't matter. What matters is if it's set to be viewable in Basecamp.

You need to do as we're trying to tell you and as Mario has explained in more detail above. Once Device manager shows it being available in Basecamp all should be well, if not we can then help further but until that point anything suggested now may not work.

Ok, the good news is all those steps worked. Javawa shows one file gmapsupp.img, and it says it is visible in BaseCamp, but it seems to contain two maps: OzTopo V2 10m contours and OzTopo V2 roads.
The bad news is there are two warning messages: "OZTopo V2 Roads is not unlocked for the linked device, and may not be used." and "gmapsupp.img contains several maps, which will be displayed simultaneously in BaseCamp."

    Any way forward from here?
  • Ok, looks like you have a map file with one part containing the map detail and the other the contours. Not sure what device you linked the card to but as you say it works in your 60 it clearly is unlocked to that device, JaVaWa may be along later and could possibly explain why you're getting the error messages you are.

So, given this is the case, and now therefore assuming your 60 is visible in Basecamp but the map isn't visible, and that you have the 60 in mass storage mode (?) I think the only way forward is for you to copy the map file to a USB stick/sd card. I'm not sure why this particular map isn't working but it will in a stick/card, remembering to place it in a folder named Garmin.

Just out of interest, are you able to post a screen shot of Basecamp showing the 60 connected?

Something has happened! Previously when connected BaseCamp would just show "Devices / Memory Card (E)" but with no contents. Now it is showing a User Data folder and the gmapsupp.img file appears to be loading! (very slowly - has taken 5 mins to get to about 40% so far).
Will let you know the result soon.
  • I suspect because either a) it's now in Mass Storage Mode or b) JaVaWa Device Manager has made the map visible in Basecamp.

Note the map isn't 'loading', it's being indexed. Basecamp having done that will display the map far faster next time but you will need to connect your 60 to view it.

Success! It must have been reason b) as I had tried all of the interface options before, this mode several times as that was the only advice Garmin Support could give me. Thank you all for the help.

I also am having issues with a Zumo 590 on my motorbike but there doesn't seem to be an appropriate forum here? I saw someone else had been directed to the Zumo forum so I'll head over there unless you are keen to have a go at that as well?

    Cheers and thanks again,
    AB
  • Depends on the problem ... there aren't forums here for device issues, but if it comes under one of the forums here, eg installing/updating maps, Basecamp, Express etc it's fine.

Glad the 60 is now working OK :)
