creating a route

Following the information on the demo for setting a route (video sets one around Hyde Park) I try the click with pen tool and follow along the A27 from the bottom of my road Hayling rise for a test route to Southampton and if I actually followed the route it would take about 2 days and I'd be dizzy with the twist and turns it made instead of following down the A27 example click to start point then drag line along A27 let it go and the megenta line goes in to the estate then after approx 2miles back out on to A27 another click goes down A27 for about 100yds disaperes again into the side streets and again emerging on to the A27 my actions never work same as the main demo or the sub (route Hyde park demo) what is this wrinkly 74yr old doing wrong?. I've been waiting for Garmin to respond but got fed up waiting for a previous fault (3 weeks ) so not prepared to wait after finding this forum.
Many thanks

why don't my routes go right

Sorry missed that out: I have a NUVI 54LM and as it only has one waypoint facility I am trying to compile a route on Basecamp following the example video 'Route' and as shown around Hyde Park on each click the demo follows the road around the park perimiter and does not deviate.

I tried a test route from Hayling Rise Worthing West sussex to Arundel approx 12 mile away the route slected was along A27 from Hayling Rise junc A27 clicked start point then drew line along A27 West toward Arundel clicked and the magenta route line went into the estate South side of A27 through various roads them emerged back to A27. WHY? Second click to continue to Arundel same thing but to north of A27. it won't accept a route direct down A27 even though very carefull in ensuring pen on the road. Also bound to have problems how if I eventually sort a route do I down load to my 54LM.
Windows 7 just for record on Acer laptop. Fed up, hungry and thirsty and off to kitchen for sustenance after long walk from living room to kitchen.

Many thanks 74 wrinkly brainless when it comes to technological problems, so go easy please.
  • Sorry, but your 54 is a basic model and won't work with routes imported from Basecamp. Incidentally I live about a mile from Hayling Rise :)

(note I've moved this thread to the Basecamp forum)

I can't help with your device as I know nothing about it but the BaseCamp behaviour you describe, preferring estate roads rather than A27, could be caused by having ticks against Major Highways or State Highways in Road Type Avoidances. Untick them and try again.
  • I've just tried that route, both with the normal settings and with avoiding major highways etc selected. I still don't get the issues described by the OP. I suspect it's more likely the OP selected the wrong carriageway on this dual lane road.

Lovely day to day isn't it just to add to my troubles my garage roof is leaking like a sieve son in law to repair.

Time to have a ruck with Garmin as I contacted them on other problems with my unit and mentioned base camp and that I wanted set up a route when towing so I can keep to major roads when in France as some months back was told the same as you have said 'its a basic model not compatible with base camp maps as they cannot be own loaded on to the Garmin 54. However the recent communication this was the reply about base camp.
' I am slightly confused as to why you were told that you cannot use this model with Basecamp. It is compatible with Basecamp and when plugged into the computer, you will be able to plot routes using the maps from the device on Basecamp.' tried posting now tells me message too short by 5 character so added this. Woe is me!! Like Kenneth Williams in the carry on up the khyber 'infamy they got it infamy'. well you gotta laugh some times. now see if this posts.
  • Strangely both are correct. Your device is compatible with Basecamp, in that you can use it to read the maps off your device, plot routes, add waypoints etc etc. The problem is that your nuvi cannot accept routes from Basecamp since the 54 doesn't have that capability. You can though send waypoints, POIs etc to it, just not routes.

    I've sent you a PM.
