Map Loading Very Slow

G'day,

I have found a thread that has been going for 4 year regarding this issue and looking through that one, I still don't have an answer. The answer at some seems to be to contact application support which still hasn't given any of us the answers.

I have a ZUMO390Lm and Basecamp 4.3.5 (the lastest I think) running on Win 8.1 good PC and the bottom line is that the map is redrawing VERY slowly and sometimes just seems to freeze. This happens with zooming, panning heck anything you do that need to refresh the map is just grinding it to a halt. At this point it becomes unusable.

Any ideas ??

Thanks
Joe
  • Which map? I don't see any real problem on my OSM and CN maps .... and I have about 20 installed. I find though that response is clearly better the lower the map detail, so I tend to do all my panning with detail level set to Medium and then switch to highest once I'm roughly where I want to be. Having said that even in Highest detail there is only a slight delay in redrawing the map edges, better with CN maps and worse with some OSM maps.

I am a beginner and don't really know what you mean by maps. Its the standard map for Australia and NZ I believe that came with my ZUMO. I only have the one map and it sits and Medium so as simple as it can get and its still slow, too slow to be useful.

As a side issue it would be nice if that map would also load even when my ZUMO is not plugged in. I have selected the option during the initial map install in Garmin Express to install the map on the device AND PC. However, I only seem to have the Global map available when the ZUMO is not plugged in.

    Thanks
    Joe
  • No idea then why your map is so slow to pan etc, however as for the map ... if you've downloaded it to your PC then it should be listed under Maps on the toolbar, and you need to ensure it's ticked. If it doesn't show there then it's not been downloaded, run Express again and select Install to PC under Advanced Options.

If it is showing and is ticked then go to View in the toolbar and ensure Basic map only isn't selected.

A couple of things to consider:

Detail -- if your map detail is very high, it will take longer to load areas of the map. One work-around to this is to lower your detail, pan to where you would like to be and you can raise the detail level again.

Device -- If the map is on the device, and not on the PC, the transfer of the data over USB will be slower than if the map was already on the PC. As suggested above, you might try installing the map to your desktop machine.

    Hope this helps!

Since, you are probably not an expert. I assume it is reading the map directly from the GPS. This can be slow depending on a variety of factors.

You have a unit with lifetime maps. You can go online to Garmin's website and sign up and register the device. After that, you will be able to install the newest version of the maps using Garmin Express. When you do that, choose the advanced option and have the maps installed to bother the computer and the GPS. Once that is complete, you will be able to choose the computer version in Basecamp and it should run quickly.
  • As a side issue it would be nice if that map would also load even when my ZUMO is not plugged in.

You apparently don't have the maps installed on your computer, only your Zumo, so Basecamp is reading the maps from the Zumo through a relatively slow USB connection. Download the maps to your computer and all should be well.

    The Solution !

Thanks everyone for commenting. Here is the solution for me in case anybody runs into the same issue.

The issue was that Garmin Express did NOT do what it said it would when I selected map update for "DEVICE AND COMPUTER". There are 3 option in Advanced Settings, Device only, Device & Computer and Computer Only. Originally, before posting for help here, I had my ZUMO plugged and selected the DEVICE & COMPUTER option thinking that it would download the latest map to my ZUMO and PC.

    That did NOT happen !!

For some reason it only downloaded it to my ZUMO again and hence there was NO map available in BASECAMP except the basic map.

What worked for me was when it stated Garmin Express without ZUMO plugged in and selected map download to COMPUTER ONLY. I then started BASECAMP and low and behold the map was there and no lag while zooming etc even on Highest.

Hope this helps someone having the same issue
    Cheers
  • Next time simply do as I suggested above and check the map is showing in Maps. If it isn't you'll know what the problem is.

Anyway, glad it's sorted so I'll close this thread.
