Help please, my data in basecamp has disappeared

I plugged in a garmin GPS unit to my computer and deleted the information off of the GPS. But when I went to reload it with new information, I found that all of my lists in all folders were empty in base camp (we are talking a lot of data as I am running a survey with 12 GPS units per day) I am sure you cant delete all information at once in basecamp without deleting the folders it is contained in also.

I have found an alldata.gdb file. I am not certain this is the file I need but when I try and load it an error comes up and says this file version is unsupported. I have base camp 4.3.5 on windows 8.1 and the file is in folder 4.3

Could somebody please help me recover my data?
  • Well you can delete all the data without deleting the folders ... but whether you did that I can't say. What exactly did you do when you deleted the data off the GPS?

Basecamp keeps old gdb data files from previous versions in directories under the version names. It also backs up these data files as alldata.gdb.bak. So do a search for both filenames, then look at the size and timestamp. Whichever is newest is the one you want. Rename the newest alldata.gbd to preserve it in case of trouble, then rename the newest alldata.gdb.bak to alldata.gdb. Restart BC.

Hope this works. Some versions will accept an alldata.gdb from a previous version and some won't. I believe that BC creates a new *bak file every time it is shut down, so if you have done this you may have to try an older version's data file. If your newest alldata.gdb.bak is nearly the same size as the empty alldata, this is what has happened. If it's much bigger, you are in luck.

This has happened to quite a number of people and underscores the importance of making a regular backup via the file menu, which is very different from the automatic backup referred to above.

I was simply selecting data in the list field and pressing delete. Could you tell me how you would delete all of the data from lists and folders with out deleting the lists and folders themselves?

My folder only shows one gdb.bak but it sounds as if there should be more than one. Also the gdb.bak is 50.5KB while the Alldata.gdb is 50.1KB

What size would you expect a base camp file to be that is completely empty of information?

Well that wouldn't/shouldn't have done it. You'd have needed to select 'All data' or whatever your top level folder is and deleted everything from there, that would leave all the folders/lists intact but with no data anywhere.
  • That error message would seem to indicate you're trying to open a database from an earlier version that is no longer supported in your current version. You could try this. Download 4.2.5 from here (the last Win XP version) and see if it will read the files you have http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435

Did you search from the root of C: drive? If you have ever updated BC you will have more than one folder with these files; I have 5. My data files range from 2.73 Mb to the present 4.63 Mb in size and while they are quite extensive, I'm guessing that the ones you found are empty. Do another search from the root.
