Basecamp data Files

I use Basecamp with my Nuvi 2595LMT and I have had a hard disc crash on my laptop.

I have rebuilt the laptop with a new disc and installed Basecamp again but all my routes and American trips are on the old disc.

This old disc is still readable but I am unable to work out which of the files contain all my routes, POI, etc.

Can anybody help and advise me which files I need to copy from the old disc to the new one?

I found some .GDB and .GFI files under

\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database

where there are three subdirectories 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 each of which has these .GDB and .GFI files but when I copy these and recreate the path it doesn't seem to acknowledge them

Any help would be appreciated.

Which version of Basecamp did you install?

You've answered your own question. The database is located, by default, in the path you posted. What you need to do is copy everything under "BaseCamp" to your new hard drive. I assume you're sticking with Windows XP and will therefore be re-installing BaseCamp 4.2.5 (later version won't work on XP). You can download that from

OK that sounds like a solution I will go ahead and try that.

With regard to the operation system, no I have gone to Windows 7, as XP is no longer supported, and version 4.3.5 of Basecamp, does your suggestion still apply i.e. are the data files backward compatible?

I'm not sure. I know in the past there have been issues IIRC. Any 4.3 version will initially create a data folder named 4.3. I suggest you try placing the files there and see what happens. If that doesn't work you should be able to use the 'Restore from previous version' option under File in the toolbar.

Right I have tried the suggestion by StuartMW and it did not seem to work, so I have probably answered my own question and the file(s)/file structure is not backward compatible.

If I remove 4.3.5 and install 4.2.5 on the new Windows 7 build then copy the file structure as suggested by StuartMW is there an upgrade path from 4.2.5 to 4.3.5 that will retain all my saved work?

As I posted, if you get it working in 4.2.5 you should then be able to install 4.3.5 and do a File, Restore from previous version

I have hit a snag. I managed to get it to see my American City Navigator map in 4.3.5 but I can't do it in 4.2.5 now that I have installed this older version.

On the old XP drive there was "E:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Garmin" and "E:\Documents and Settings\Steve Barry\Application Data\Garmin" I have copied all the subdirectories to "C:\Users\Steve Barry\AppData\Local\Garmin" because the user data file structure is different in Windows 7.

It doesn't recognise the map as being there; any ideas?

Have you managed to move your data?

To move maps use JaVaWa's GMTK program.
