newbie trying to trace a trail for upcoming hike

I have a Montana and am running Basecamp version 4.3.5. I have the Topo US 100k map and have also downloaded Birdseye map of the area I am going to be hiking. I see the trail I would like to take both on the Topo US 100k map and the Birdseye map. I would like to select the portion of the trail that I plan to hike to plan for our trip (and ultimately download it to my Montana to follow when hiking). I have tried creating both a New Track and New Route and thus far am only able to get any results by manually tracing the trail. Is there an easier way to do this? (e.g. click on segments along the trail and have BC trace the rest of the trail?). Another problem I have is when I zoom in far enough to trace with any accuracy, I don't see all the trail and don't know how to "pause"...zoom out...zoom back in... and resume tracing.

Thanks in advance for your ideas, thoughts and suggestions...

I'm confused. You can put the map and the birdseye on the Montana and see the trail on the screen and follow it there. There is no need to create a track.

There is a way to convert the map trails to tracks, but that is better discussed in a map making forum as it is not necessarily "approved" by Garmin.
  • Not sure what you mean by 'manually tracing the trail'. The 100K map isn't routeable, so the only way is to use the Direct activity profile, this requires you to manually insert points and as you do so you get a straight line between them. Is this what you mean?

You can zoom in/out using the scroll wheel (if you mouse has one).

    Thanks for the replies.

@jbarge- my goal is to have a "route" I can follow already on my GPS when I start the hike

@sussamb- thanks for the key term -"the 100k map isn't routeable". After installing the 24k map, I could accomplish what I was trying to do my inserting a couple waypoints on the 24k map in basecamp and then basecamp could created a route that I could analyze for elevation change, distance, etc.

So i've solved my immediate problem, but I'm still curious if I need to draw a track on a map is there a methodology that supports drawing part of the track, zoom out, pan, zoom back in and continue tracing?

Use the mouse wheel to zoom and the arrow keys to pan.
