To different distances for each track

I have recently upgraded from an Oregon 450 to an Oregon 650 and now all of my tracks show two different distances depending on whether I am looking at the main screen with all of the tracks visable or when I have clicked on an individual track. The distances shown in the main screen with all of the tracks showing are shorter by 1-500 meters for each track. When I click on each individual track the distance shown is longer. I have tried exporting some of the gps files to other programs and each time they agree with the individual track distances.

This is extremely frustrating as I like to tally up the total distance each year hiking/biking etc...
  • Different distances.

I too am having a similar issue. This week I did a 28.32 km hike (according to my Oregon 650). But when uploaded to Garmin Connect it shows as 26.07 km. How can I account for a 2.25 km discrepancy between the two? I just want Garmin Connect to show what I actually did, but now I'm really not sure.
  • GPS will not give exact distance covered. This would require no error in position. Even then it would not be exact. The distance value is in the horizontal only; it does not take into account changes in elevation.

Without seeing the gpx files for a track, I can’t say with any confidence what is happening. Recently on my non-Oregon device the track file has begun to include the distance value from the Trip Computer. Although I haven’t verified this, it appears to me that the value on my trip computer is only for points where the GPS thought, by some logic, I was moving.

Until recently, track files gave the total distance based on all points in the file. This may no longer be true. For instance, BaseCamp will display the Trip Computer value for a downloaded track for my device. Delete a single point and it will recalculate the distance based on the logged points. It may use all of the points, or it may also apply some logic to discern movement and thus use a subset of the logged points.

It this is happening with the Oregon 650, the Trip Computer value will appear before any of the track points in the gpx file (viewable with any text editor like Notepad or Wordpad) and will be meters. You can check to see if this corresponds to one of your values. The other value will be based on the logged points. (The Trip Computer logs every second while the track log interval will depend on the user setting).
