Restoring from a Backup

This has come up before, but I don't know if there have been any new developments. I had a hard drive crash last week and was able to get most of my data off the old drive, but not my Basecamp database. The good news is that I made a backup file in mid-July, and that plus what's still on my 1490's memory should get me completely restored. However, as has been pointed out by others, my entire folder hierarchy and filing system has disappeared. The tracks and waypoints appear to all be there, but it's all one big list.

Two questions: 1) Is there any way to get it back? 2) How do I avoid this in future?

EDIT -- Well, I stand corrected. My folders were there, I was just looking in the wrong area. I would delete this post entirely, but I don't think I can.

It sounds to me like you did an "Export" (to GPX file(s)) of your database. That only saves some data and in a "flat" (no folder structure) format.

The built-in BaseCamp "backup" feature saves the entire database to a place of your choosing. Restoring that will put everything back that way it was at the date/time of the backup. Using a backup program (3rd party or the built-in one with Windows) should also completely backup your database(s). If you do that you do have to know the location(s) of your database(s) and may have to manually select those location in the backup software.

Thanks for the clarification. I put a backup file on a thumb drive in the middle of July, so 99% of my stuff was recovered with absolutely no drama. I'll just get in the habit of doing this after each journey. Nothing like a hard drive crash to tune up one's backup habits.
