Deafult BaseCamp 'waypoint' icon and name

This is all new to me and I have managed to pick up quite a lot intuitively which is awesome, but I can't seem to figure out how to change the default icon for waypoints? I am planning a journey across France and Europe of around 1200 miles and it looks like I will have thousands of waypoints. Having to change the icon and name every.single.time. is very annoying! Is it possible to change the default settings, because if it is I can't figure it out at all! Thanks ;)

You can definitely change the defaults but I don't think that's possible through BC itself (unlike MapSource). The defaults are stored in the Windows registry in the

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\BaseCamp\Settings\Waypoint

key. The trick is knowing what values to set "Symbol" and "Waypoint Name Length" to. "Symbol" is a hexadecimal value that defines the default icon/symbol while "Waypoint Name Length" defines the length of waypoint names that your device can accept.

This post contains the values for "Symbol".

PS: I think the BC install default for "Symbol" is 0x8E which is the green flag.

Hi, that was really quick and really helpful, except I am on windows 8 and the registry editor shows 'garminbasecamp' and there are only about 4 keys in there, none of them are called 'waypoint.' If there is another way to find the full set of 'HKEYs' I would love to know!

    Thanks :)

(Thankfully :)) I don't have Win8 so I can't help with those details. That said knowing Microsoft you probably have to run the registry editor as an Administrator to see all keys.
  • Microsoft Surface Pro, Windows 8.1, in RegEdit the path is exactly as STUARTMW stated...

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\Basecamp\Settings\Waypoint

The Waypoint key includes "Symbol" (which defaults to 0x8d here) and "Waypoint Name Length" which defaults to 0x20.

EDIT: Damn! The forum editor is screwing with the Registry path. I type the word "Settings" and it is substituting "Setting.s" as it did in STUARTMW's. So in the path above and in STUARTMW's post, use "Settings", not "Setting.s"

    ...ken...
