Help: Basecamp puts some of my waypoints in the wrong place

I recently took waypoints along a creek. I named the two end points "051Begin" and "071End" and for the ~20 waypoints in between I let the unit name them with numbers (051-070) by just hitting the "mark" button as I walked along. When I plug my unit into my computer it loads the "internal storage" my series of waypoints come up on the map. However, when I click the "Receive from device" button something goes wrong: My two endpoints are in the right place but the unit-named waypoints all end up 35.6 miles to the SSE.

I just updated from 4.3.4 to 4.3.5 to see if that would fix the problem and it does not.

I also tried using the select tool to select all the points from the unit "internal storage" list, copying them, and pasting them into a new list and once again the two endpoints appear in the correct position while the others are in the wrong place.

What gives, and how do I fix this?

In case it matters, my unit is a GPSmap 60Cx, and I'm running Windows 8.1

Are the waypoints in the right place in your 60CX? I suspect not.

I wonder if your unit lost reception (which can result in your symptoms). Were you in a wooded area or canyon etc?

The waypoints are in the correct place when displayed on the unit, as well as on the Basecamp display map when I am viewing the "internal storage" list.

Ahhh. Sorry I missed that detail in your first post. Definitely sounds like a bug in BC.

I wonder if has anything to do with the fact that the 60/76 use the Garmin USB protocol instead of mass-storage or MTP mode.
  • I’m afraid this really needs the attention of one of the developers.

It is very odd that viewing the waypoints on the device storage thru BaseCamp would show them correctly located while some shift and others do not went sent to BaseCamp. I say this because I am assuming that the 60cx stores data as gpx files and therefore a text to binary conversion must occur when viewing the data in BaseCamp.

Assuming I am correct about how the 60cx operates, there should be a way to set it up as a mass storage device (should show up as a drive under My Computer – see the set-up section on your device) and directly copy the files from the device to your computer. This would be useful for Garmin to address the problem and allow you to save your data. You can try importing this saved file into BaseCamp to see if it works. You should also export the data that is sent to BaseCamp from your device as a gpx file for comparison to the one from your device.

Do not be surprised to a slight difference between the device values and BaseCamp values. The text to binary to text conversion has always been a little quirky, but the change is on the order of a few mm or 1/8 of an inch.

If you still have MapSource, you use that to capture your data.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

...I am assuming that the 60cx stores data as gpx files...

You assumed incorrectly :p The 60c/76C models don't use GPX files at all. As I said in this post

above they use the Garmin USB protocol for the exchange of user data (waypoints, tracks and routes).

The mass storage mode of the 'x' models turns them into a large/expensive card reader so a microSD card in the unit can be accessed. However that is only useful for map transfers (it's much faster to use a real card reader) or for putting non-GPS files on the card.

Here's Garmin's FAQ on the subject.

How can I view the files on my microSD card using USB mass storage mode?

Some Garmin outdoor handheld devices can be put into USB mass storage mode, turning the device into a card reader and allowing an inserted microSD card to be read by a computer. This card reader provides the ability to install detailed mapping to the device, in addition it provides the ability to locate active tracks that have been archived to the card. While in mass storage mode, these files can be viewed on the computer. However, there is no access to any data stored on the device itself while in this mode.

That's how I transfer data to/from my 76CSx. It's the only unit I own that I allow direct access to from (any) Garmin software. I manually copy GPX files to/from my other models.

One can read data from the 60C/76C models using MapSource, save it to one or more GDB/GPX files, and then import those file(s) into BaseCamp.

BTW the 60C/76C models are "discontinued" in Garmin's terminology. I don't know of any current model that still uses the Garmin USB protocol. Current models use mass storage or MTP mode. I wouldn't be surprised if Garmin USB protocol support was dropped in BC at some point (I think it supported serial devices in the early days but no longer does).
