"An error occurred when attempting to use the OSM Generic Routable Map Product."

I get the above error in Basecamp when I try to open one of the OSM Generic Routable Maps that I installed on my Garmin etrex 20. I got the maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/. They worked fine for a while. This error may have started when I installed a map created with imgfromgpx. When I connect the etrex to the computer with Basecamp running I get the error "An error occurred when attempting to use the Overview Map Map Product." (sic). Can't find info on this error message anywhere. I would try uninstalling the maps but I don't know how. Thanks for your help!
  • I ran Uninstall.exe and it removed all of the maps from openstreetmap.nl. The error went away. Maybe there's a conflict between the openstreetmap.nl maps and the ones created by imgfromgpx? Is there some sort of installation/management software that can resolve such conflicts between Garmin img maps - if that's what's happening?

Generally not, unless you used a map ID that is also used by the OSM.

    Yes: http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html
  • I'm sorry for being so ignorant, but I apparently don't know how to install img files on my etrex 20. I downloaded some files from openstreetmap.nl and extracted them to "C:\Garmin\Maps\OSM generic routable(US-AZ)". Then I copied all of those files to my etrex device with was "G:\Garmin". The maps worked on my etrex and I could see them in Basecamp. Is this the correct way to install map files? ... No. Ok, I see.

I re-re-reread the instructions at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Garmin.OpenStreetMap.nl:Manual. I deleted and uninstalled all of the osm files off of my etrex. I unzipped the file osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip and got the single file gmapsupp.img. I copied it to the E:\Garmin directory on my etrex. As per the instructions. At first I couldn't see the streets and then I right clicked one the map under the device and selected Open. Now I can see the streets. That same "right click" menu has a selection "Install Maps on etrex 20". When I click on that MapInstall comes up. Am I supposed to run that? The instructions don't say anything about it that I can see.
  • You can download several kinds of files from garmin.openstreetmap.nl:

    osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip
This one contains a file (gmapsupp.img; you may rename it to {whatever}.img when you want to put other maps on your eTrex). You can use this map in BaseCamp, but only when the device is connected to your PC. MapInstall isn't relevant, since that program is used to install maps from your PC to the eTrex (not needed because you have the map already on the eTrex).
When you want to check for conflicts with other maps on the device you need another program: JaVaWa Device Manager

    osm_generic_windows.exe
This one installs the map on your PC, so you can use it without connecting the eTrex. You could transfer this map to the device with MapInstall, but because you already have it, this step isn't necessary for now. These kind of installed maps can be checked/managed with JaVaWa GMTK.

    osm_generic_macosx.zip
In spite of the name this isn't exclusively for the Mac; you can also use it under Windows. It can be installed with GMTK (or doing it the hard way and place it in the correct folder yourself). It contains the same thing as the previous one, in a different format. The self-installing osm_generic_windows.exe is probably easier to use.

    osm_generic_tiles.zip
You don't need this one, unless you want to combine several maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl with OSM Combiner.

You can also download separate map tiles (6324xxxx.img) from garmin.openstreetmap.nl, but they're not so useful as the downloads mentioned above. Don't bother, unless you know what you are doing...
  • Thanks so much for your reply Javawa. I'm going to contribute $ when I get this up and running. As I stated above I put the gmapsupp.imp in the E:\Garmin directory of my etrex. It looks good but there are some old maps that are in the way. The etrex will not let me delete them, only enable or disable them. I can't find a way to delete or remove maps in Basecamp or JaVaWA GMTK. I tried deleting anything that looks like something I added from the E:\Garmin directory. Any ideas how I can delete old maps from my etrex?
  • Sorry I haven't touched this lately, slammed with work.

This is strange. There were more entries on this thread and now they're gone? Someone suggested that I try Javawa Device Manager. I tried it and I wrote an entry saying that I did and that it worked and I had some more questions, but now all those entries are gone. Maybe the work of the Admin since the topic was straying. Usually Admins will start a new thread or give you a notice. Oh well. Thanks to all who helped me!
