BaseCamp routing choices that just boggle my mind

So I'm going to post 2 simple point to point routes that go through a small town in MO called Potosi for your consideration. Both built in BaseCamp 4.3.5, but it's done this with the previous version too. The first one will be set for fastest route, the second one will be set for shortest. Neither one takes the primary road, MO-8, straight through town to the destination. Why? There are not enough stops, one sign and one light, on the primary road to make it slower than all the gyrating on either BaseCamp suggested routes. In fact, there are more stop signs on both BaseCamp suggested routes than the primary road. This is the kind of thing I can't stand about BaseCamp. I don't think I should need to put 6 shaping points/waypoints in a route just to pass through this little town.
  • If you want to go through the town just enter it as a waypoint. Strange as most folks complain when BC routes them through towns rather than around!

Also maybe in routing you have BC set to 'Avoid residential roads'?

Two strikes. I insert the waypoint you suggest and it still wiggles around in the town.

And no, I do not have avoid residential roads selected.

Finally had time to make a visual. It's the attached JPG, for those that are interested.
  • Which map is Basecamp using? What happens if you try the route on your GPS (which do you have)? Which Activity Profile do you have selected?

It certainly looks weird, but if there's an issue it'll be with the map and/or Basecamp settings rather than BC itself.
  • Definitely a map issue or a settings issue, I've just run a route through Potosi on a OSM map I have loaded in BC and it works perfectly, takes Route 8 all the way through.

BaseCamp v4.3.5. Using map City Navigator North America NT 2015.1.

Both my Nuvi 3760LMT and my Zumo 390LM route directly though Potosi, following MO-8. Building route in their native trip planner.

On BaseCamp I've had the same problem with Motorcycle, set to either shortest distance or fastest time. Just tried "Driving" and it routes correctly.

Maps and settings within BaseCamp, not controlled by the user, are BaseCamp, in my opinion.
  • Well maps and settings are controlled by the user, but from what you've now said if the driving profile works OK, and it certainly worked OK when I used it, there may be a problem with the motorcycle profile, which I now understand is what you used initially and what seems to be causing the weird routing?

Looking at the default settings in Basecamp things like 'Avoid major highways' are selected. Given that MO-8 may be classed as a 'major road or highway' it would explain what you consider to be 'weird routing', so either adjust your default settings or use the driving profile.

It is possible to also make a custom profile based on the motorcycle profile where you can keep the defaults as they are and adjust what you need to. If avoiding major highways isn't an issue I would consider doing this. Also, you can change route settings on a per-route basis. Let us know if this improves your experience.

Yeah, I goofed up the first attempt at changing routing settings on just this route, and it went through and changed every "motorcycle" activity profiled route I had in the folder. I'm a little gunshy to attempt it again. I did mess around with a custom activity profile, but have not found the magic combination yet.
  • IF the driving profile meets your needs just use that, I find it fits all my various styles of driving :)

I do though have 2 set up, one with Avoid tolls selected, one without, so I can plot different routes, mainly across France where often avoiding the toll roads is almost as fast as not but far prettier ;)
