Mapping Problems with Etrex and Basecamp

Hi all. Looking for some help with mapping using an Garmin Etrex Vista HCx and Basecamp.

Not sure what I am doing wrong but most of my routes, once downloaded into Basecamp show a lot of vectors not required. As a result some of my maps are a nightmare.
I guess it comes down to the operator not knowing what the hell he is doing. Trying to keep this short, but many questions come to mind.
How do we start and stop the route such that we end up with vectors that belong to it only........ and not associated with any other trips? Naturally I have to save the track - but then
I am faced with sometimes having navigate to the start and end points on the small Etrex Screen. Do you have any ideas on how to make this easier?

If you have come across similar problems in managing your routes and uploading them to Basecamp where these problems are avoided, I would appreciate your comments.
  • Navigating to start points on any handheld is the same, as far as I'm aware, you need to get yourself there. Other option is to load the start (or finish) as separate waypoints and just do a 'Where to', then select the route you want to navigate once at the start. There are other ways but that seems the simplest to me. I don't find it an issue as I plan my routes from known points, or at least points that I know how to get to.

Not sure what you mean by vectors. If these are straight lines on your track log this is due to you not waiting when you start until your Etrex has a good satellite lock, then doing a Clear Current Track. At the end ensure you Save current track. Then all you'll have is a track of where you actually went. You can use Basecamp though by using the Divide tool to remove portions you don't want.
