Long Route how-to in basecamp

I've got 3 different Nuvi's (1400 series, 2500 series), and I've loaded Basecamp to use to create custom routes. One example is a trip I take from Tn to FL whre I want to goa particular way, not the way the GPS would calculate on it's own. I tried creating a GPX from Google maps using various 3rd party tols, and managed to get a GPX file loaded but it didn't work so well.

So, I tried Basecamp. Seems to be a reasonable tool for the task but...

I tried to create a route using trip planner. As far as I can tell, at least with my Nuvi's, there's no way to load trip planner info/routes onto the devices. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

A simple route would do, so I choose new, route. I get the pencil tool. And the tutorial shows to click on the 2 spots to start and end to get the route calculated. My problem is when in pencil tool mode, it's pretty difficult to navigate from my start spot in Tennessee, to the end location in FL. Especially if I don't know where to start zooming. How can I enter the start and end points without using the pencil tool? And/or, how can I start then switch to pan mode to get to the new spot, then switch back to pencil mode to mark it?

What is the best-practice for defining a long route like this in Basecamp?

Thanks
Scott

Thank you. The maps from the 14xx loaded sucessfully in BaseCamp. I do notice now that from the menubar item "maps" that I have a selection for the maps I downloaded. Now I see road details without the device attached to the PC. Nice.

The "new" units are both older than 90 days. One was last fall for Daughter to go to college, the other Christmas for the wife. Other advise appreciated.
  • The important thing is did you update the maps within that 90 day period? If so Express should enable you to download them again, then you'd have both sets in BC so could select whichever was the appropriate one.

Maybe on one of them. Will try. Any workaround if I did not?
  • Yep, but more complicated so check first :)

It appears to be loading (device and PC, 2 items, 3 hours remaining).

I had never registered the 25xx(s), so I presume its "clock" hadn't started yet. It may have included lifetime updates based on below, not sure. Anyway, it says it's loading:

Full Coverage of NA ... 2015.10
    and it has a pending
    Nuvi Maps Lifetime NA download....2015.10

Still a little fuzzy on what issues I may have when done. So once loaded, I guess I'll have 2 different maps? How do I deal with them when making my routes that I'd want on both models?
  • Well if both have lifetime updates it's not an issue as you'll have the same map on both and in Basecamp.

The clock starts when they acquire first satellite fix so if it's updating you'll have lifetime maps based on what you said earlier.

    Thanks.

EDIT: Never mind previous question posted here (deleted), on rereading the answer given, I understand now.

Thanks for the help. This is a much more useful tool thanks to same.

    Much appreciated, Scott
