nuvi 42LM Waypoints - How to delete, and how to send

My nuvi 255W died, and I got the 42LM - Why did they mess up something that worked great?

This is what I figured out. The 42LM requires a lot of work arounds.

How to delete all Favorites in the 42LM - and make it work

The instructions say:
Hold down the bottom right corner, while powering on the GPS / Erase all user data? Yes
... If you hold down the top left, while powering on the GPS, it enters calibration mode.
... I don't see that the bottom left, and top right, do anything.

99% of the time, all of the Waypoints will still be there
... As of 7/15/14, Garmin says they don't have a fix for this

Sometimes, all of the Waypoints will be deleted, except for a random one - and the three default Garmin waypoints that it puts back.

In either case, you have to manually delete all of them, which can be time consuming, especially if you have a lot of them (like 96 of them):
Where to? / Favorites / Select a Favorite / Select the information balloon / Delete - Yes

Work around:

Plug in the GPS to the computer
Delete everything in the GPX folder . . . F: / Garmin nuvi / GPX
In the System Tray, Safely remove hardware / Eject the GPS
... if you don't close BaseCamp, select "Continue" to eject the GPS
Hold down the bottom right corner, while powering on the GPS / Erase all user data? Yes
Now, all the data is gone, except for the three default Garmin waypoints - delete those

Sending Waypoints from BaseCamp to the 42LM

Step 1: Using BaseCamp, get all of your Waypoints into a Category
... With the 42LM, you have to transfer 12 at a time, in order for the Category to show up on the GPS
... As of 7/15/14, Garmin says they don't have a fix for this

My Categories:
D People
F Fast Food
H Grocery
J Stores
L Mail
N Travel
P Explore
Z 12 Waypoints Min

Step 2: Since it sorts them by distance:
1.) create a folder named: Z 12 Waypoints Min
2.) within BaseCamp, create one Waypoint that's far away from where you normally go, and Duplicate it as many times as needed (see below)
3.) rename the Waypoints to: zz-01 . . . to . . . zz-19 (this is how many I needed)
. . . could you repeat zz-01, zz-02, zz-03 in multiple, different Categories? no, they have to be "stand alone" Waypoints in each Category

Category . . . How many Waypoints are in this folder? . . . How many do I need to make it at least 12?

D . . . 10 . . . 2
F . . . 11 . . . 1
H . . . 09 . . . 3
J . . . 21 . . . 0
L . . . 07 . . . 5
N . . . 04 . . . 8
P . . . 15 . . . 0
Z . . . 12 . . . 0

I need a total of 19

Step 3:
1.) go through all of your Categories, and put the Waypoints into that Category:
. . . Highlight all of them within the folder / right-click Open / Category tab / at the bottom, type in "D People" / Add Category / Close with the red X . . . repeat for all
2.) put in the extra Waypoints, so the total per category is at least 12, and do the same thing
. . . Highlight them within the folder / right-click Open / Category tab / at the bottom, type in "D People" / Add Category / Close with the red X . . . repeat for all

File / Backup . . . backup your data to a folder

Step 4:
Transfer the Waypoints to the GPS
a.) can you just highlight the folder to send? yes
b.) can you highlight just the Waypoints per Category, and it will pick up ones from the other folder?
. . . no, you have to highlight at least 12 at a time to send
. . . can some be in a different folder? no, they all have to be in the same folder
c.) can you just highlight and send the "Categorized" folder with all of them, all at once? yes, do this

You can then delete the extra Waypoints in the GPS, and the Category will stay, but I would leave them, it's no big deal if they just sit there.

Ideally: As with the 255W, you could add Waypoints to the 42LM, Receive All from it, and put the new Waypoints in a Category in BaseCamp, delete all data on the 42LM, and then re-send them back to the GPS.
... With the 255W, if a Favorite was typed into it, it looks like it will transfer to the computer, but not go to a category.
... So you just looked at the non-categorized Waypoints in BaseCamp, and put them in a category.

But remember - the 42LM is not like the 255W, where you could easily delete all of your Waypoints, and refresh it with the main copy in BaseCamp.
... You can, but it's more complicated, as described above

So, if you add a Waypoint through the GPS, you have to manually add it in BaseCamp. Reason:

This Bug: I see that if I delete everything I had originally Categorized for the 255W, and then Receive it back from the 42LM, the Categories are lost.
... the Categories are still in the Waypoints, but not seen in BaseCamp
... if I delete everything on the GPS, and then re-send this from BaseCamp back to the GPS . . . need to test this, I suspect, no categories - but who cares, I need the categories in BaseCamp

. . . Delete the default "Home" that it creates
. . . Rename "Home 1" to "Home" . . . leave it un-categorized

Volume / Change it to 60 from 80
