Why does BaseCamp help refer to Apple keyboard keys rather than Windows?

I updated my maps today and got the option to install Garmin BaseCamp. I'm trying it for the first time and the help instructions for moving a route tells me to use the Option key on the keyboard (of course this doesn't exist on a PC). How do I get the Windows instructions?

Thanks,
Mike
  • Can you quote exactly what it says, or where you're seeing that? I'm not quite sure either what you mean by 'moving routes', what are you trying to do?

Hi. I created a route from NH to Orlando FL, but it takes me too close to New York City. So, like Google Maps. I want to drag the route away from the city. It doesn't appear I can, so I am trying to my a section of the route to go on a different interstate. When I select Tools, the dropdown says to type "M" for the move tool. That doesn't work so I must be using it wrong. When I check "Help" for the word "Move" the instructions say:

1.With a route visible on the map, select the Selector Tool.
2.Select an option:◦Drag a segment of the route to a new location.
    New points are added automatically.
◦Hold Option on your keyboard, and drag a point to a new location.

I have a PC, but that is a Mac keyboard command. That's what I was talking about. So I need to solve that, plus how do I edit an auto-calculated route from NH to FL?
    Thanks,
    Mike
  • Found it, it's under Routes, Editing route points on the map.

Yes, something seems wrong there, I'll let the Basecamp team sort that out :)

In the meantime, and assuming you have 4.3.4 installed (?) I guess what you're after is to insert viapoints into a route. To do so have a look at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JnqwnHEPPY

There are other ways but that should get you started.

I do have 4.3.4 installed on Windows 7 SP1. I just deleted it and re-installed it (for certain the Windows version) and the help file still refers to Mac commands. Anyway, I did manage to get a route in there, but in one town instead of staying on the interstate, for some reason it got off, took a loop around a few streets and then got back on the interstate. How do I delete that loop route and make it stay straight on the interstate? I only have a start point and end point, no waypoints in between. I've searched Garmin and YouTube for help but don't see anything yet. Also, I tried inserting a waypoint before and after the loop and moving the route but of course all I have is Mac commands to go by... I also tried the "Divide" tool to split the route but it doesn't so anything. Any ideas on straightening out my route?
    Thanks,
    Mike
  • Well the uTube video I linked you to uses Windows and explains how to insert via points etc. As for straightening your route it could be various issues, possibly even a map error, but from your description it's hard to determine. Are you able to post a screenshot, and also say what your start and end points are, and which map you're using? I assume you have the driving activity profile selected?

No screenshot because I somehow figured out how to split (and don't want to undo to the error scenario) and now have the route correct, but it's because I have a route from NH to Waterbury CT and then from that point to FL.

Is there a way to join the two routes so they are one big route?
Also, if I invert the route for the trip back, does it show as a separate route so I can upload both the the unit (Nuvi 855)?

    Mike
  • You can join the routes by selecting them both in the lower left hand pane, then right click and select Join selected routes. Not sure how long that route would be, note that there can be problems with long/complicated routes on a nuvi but there's no hard and fast rule so trial and error. Just ensure you check it on the nuvi before you set out!

If you want to invert it first duplicate it so that the original is unaffected, by right clicking and select Duplicate route. Then right click the duplicate and select Invert route.

Wow, it's amazing how easy it is when I have the right steps! I really thank you for the help. I wish I knew what I did to stumble on the route correction because it was un unintuitive accident.
    Thanks again,
    Mike
  • Yep, Basecamp is easy when you know how :)

If you're not aware of what happens when you send the routes to your nuvi check out this FAQ

OK I will do that. Now I do notice (see screenshot attached) that when the routes joined, they created a circle again. Do you see that and any suggestions?
