Unable to import EveryTrail gpx into BaseCamp

I'm just getting started with BaseCamp and my Garmin GPSmap 62st. I was trying to create import an existing track that I had created with using EveryTrail on my Android phone, but each time I try I get an error code (Unknown error trying to open import file). Any ideas on this? Thanks.
  • Yes. BaseCamp (actually, Garmin) is very selective about what types of GPX files it will read. If any code is present in the GPX file that Garmin software engineers have not accounted for, the file will be rejected entirely, instead of just skipping the code they dont want to deal with. Sometimes BaseCamp will even reject GPX files created solely by Garmin GPSr units!
  • If that's the reason, please explain why MapSource can read GPX files with a lot of recent additions that didn't exist when the last version of MapSource was published...

It is perfectly possible to add your own custom code to GPX files and still be compatible with Garmin programs, as long as the contents of the file is valid XML. A lot of programmers of websites and tools don't have sufficient knowledge about XML and think they can get away by putting extra stuff in GPX files without checking whether the result is still valid.

Yes, the programs of Garmin are quite critical and don't accept files with rubbish in it; IMHO not a bad thing.
When the file can't be read by BaseCamp blame the creator of that file (and yes, sometimes even Garmin devices are doing it wrong! But usually that is fixed fairly quick)

I am moving from MapSource to Basecamp since I now own an EDGE1000 and Basecamp seems to be the currently supported product. I have hundreds of routes I have created in MS - many of then import into BC fine but many do not - give that annoying message - unknown error. Is there anything to do to fix these?

Download the free tool RTWtool from JaVaWa, open the GPX in RTWtool, convert it to do nothing and use the clipboard paste in BaseCamp to have the Everytrail track in a list.

RTWtool will create valid GPX files for BaseCamp.

The problem with the GPX is that inside th GPX Everytrail did not follow all the xml rules and thats why BaseCamp does not accept the file. It's not a fault or bug of BaseCamp.

Here are a couple things you can try. First, open a problem route in MapSource and see if a copy and paste directly into BaseCamp works (do this to an empty list). If that doesn't work, try converting a problem route to a Direct route in MapSource, then try bringing it into BaseCamp and recalculating.

I don't run the current version of BaseCamp, but it should import routes as they were calculated in MapSource. Since BaseCamp uses a different algorithm for calculating routes, it would be a good idea to recalculate your routes as you import them to verify that no changes occur. I would probably duplicate the route (do not duplicate the waypoints) then recalculate the original, alter the original if needed followed by deleting the duplicate.
