How does Base Camp determine the location of a picture (no geotag in pic metadata)

Ok.

I decided to create an adventure from the track of the hike I took today. When I went to add pictures Base Camp placed them in the EXACT location I took the pictures.

This should not have happened. The pictures were taken by my Android phone and not my Garmin gps. I have examined the metadata of the pictures and they contain no geotags (and verified that geotagging is off on my phone's camera app).

Is Base Camp identifying landmarks in the pictures or something like that (it would not have been difficult in this case, as the pictures were taken in a well traveled area of RMNP)?

BAsecamp will match up date/time of the pictures taken to date/time of points in a recorded track. I thought that feature had to be manually invoked but maybe Adventure building does it automatically. Manually matching pics is done from a right click on a track in the list view, then selecting "Geotag Photos from track" option. I have used this feature in basecamp a lot and I am impressed every time.
