Custom Proximity Alerts (Why do they not work in Basecamp?)

Newbie here so sorry guys if this has already been asked.

I am trying to send my Custom Proximity Alerts from Basecamp to my GPS but I can't seem to make it work

What I tried so far

1) Pois edited in Basecamp set Prox. Alert from 100 to 500 meters and transferred to my GPS (And No Alerts)
2) (Same Pois as 1) exported to gpx and transferred to my GPS with PoiLoader, Poiloader doesn't take notice of my custom alerts but only takes the alerts which you set in the program itself

After step 2 the Prox. Alerts work in my GPS but all alerts are within the proximity you set in PoiLoader and don't take into consideration my Custom Prox. Alerts which I set with Basecamp

What I am seeing now that to get (Basic) Prox. Alerts working with my GPS, I have to take 2 steps (or more)

1- Export my Pois (from within Basecamp)
2- Transfer my Pois with Poi Loader to GPS (No support for custom Prox. Alerts)
3- Transfer my Routes.

What can I do to elminate Step 1 and 2 and ALSO have my custom Prox. Alerts.

Thanks in advance

Edit: // Added Ps:

Ps: Using the Latest Basecamp 4.3.3 and my GPS is a Nuvi 2575 (Se-Asia Edition)

    Oke another question then,

is it possible to manually edit the files on the GPS (Which one ??) to add those Prox. Alerts after I transferred my routes ?

    Thanks

AFAIK (and I could be wrong!) uploading from Basecamp has no effect on the proximity alerts, you need to use the POI Loader.

However whenever I have used the POI Loader on automatic I get rather variable results! Sometimes it announces when I don't want an alert, and sometimes doesn't when I do want an alert. My trick is always to manually create the file prior to copying over to the GPS. This way I control if, when (distance or speed) the alert is triggered.

    Best regards

    HI,

thanks, I thought that if I set proximity alerts in Basecamp they would be send to my GPS and my GPS would alert me.

For example if I am doing a stretch on a Highway I want the GPS to alert me 2km from the Waypoint, but if I am doing a Hill Climb I want the GPS to warn me approx 500 meters from the Waypoint.

These waypoints are part of routes which I make with Basecamp.

    Questions:

    - How do you manually create the file ?
    - Will this mess up my routes, because I will first have to send the poi's / waypoints to my GPS and then my Routes.
    - Why isn't this directly possible from Basecamp -> GPS

    Thanks en Dank
  • When you transfer points from BaseCamp, they are sent as waypoints (Favorites or Saved Places), not as custom POI's on your nuvi. AFAIK no nuvi supports proximity alert on saved Favorites. You must load the points as Custom POI's with POI Loader in order to enable proximity alerts. I don't think BaseCamp has a function for transferring Custom POI's to the nuvi.

Of course, if you use a point in a route, the nuvi will announce it when you approach it (eg. "Arriving at Bob's house"). That is not the same as a proximity alert though.

    Thanks ADBUCK.

So what I want is impossible ?

I only want that, when I send a Route to my GPS, I want my GPS to alert me when I am near (for example) the Middle Point (in a 3 point route(Start, Middle End).

But because these 3 Points get send to my GPS as Favorites, my GPS will never warn me ? Is this correct ?

Will this then work ? (I can test this, but it's already late here (and sometimes it's easier to ask ;) )

1- Create a 3 point route with Basecamp (start, middle, end)
    2- Export the 3 Poi's
3- Import those Poi's with Poi Loader into my GPS
4- Send the Route (created under # 1) in Basecamp to my GPS (Doesn't sending the route with Basecamp overwrite the Poi's from # 3 ??)

Will I be alerted when I get to the Middle or end End point ?

Thanks very much for your input, very much appreciated !
  • If the waypoints are part of a route and you are navigating the active route, you will get the standard "arriving at" announcement for the via points included in the route, not custom proximity alerts. If you load points with POI Loader and enable custom proximity alerts for those points, you will get the custom alert when you approach the point whether or not you are navigating a route and whether or not it is part of a route.
