From Base Camp Route to Garmin Course

How do I get a Route Created in Base Camp 4.3.1 to be a usable 'Course' on my Garmin 810... In Base Camp I can copy the 'Route' to the SD card on the Garmin but I can't find it as a course to follow on the Garmin? What am I doing wrong. Pointing to a link that shows to to make this happen all the way to starting the course on the Garmin would be great. I keep seeing tutorials showing how to get the info to the SD card on the Garmin in Base Camp but then that is it.

Thank you

A total newbie here with the same question using a Nuvi 265w. I will be lurking to see if there is an answer!
  • The 265 isn't capable of handling routes, so there isn't a way for you unfortunately.

What about the Garmin 810? Are their instructions on how to get a 'Route' from BaseCamp into a 'Course' on the Garmin 810?
  • This is just a guess. Try converting the Route to a Track and send the track to Edge. (Double click on the route in the lower left pane and choose the Create Track button at the bottom of the pop-up Window).

Thank you BTLAAKE but that didn't work. I created the track then send it to the Garmin - that appeared to work but then I can't find it on the Garmin. I look under Courses and it is not there.
  • A couple of things that come to mind. One is that it is being sent to the wrong location on the device. I don't own an Edge, but most of the newer devices behave like external storage devices. You should be able to see navigate to your device thru My Computer. Check with the Edge Manual and see if they are being sent to correct location. If not, move them to the correct folder.

Another possibility is that the device doesn't support gpx files. If that is the case, you can try exporting a tcx file from BaseCamp and manually moving it to the correct folder on your device. Sorry I can't be of much help since I don't own an Edge.

You might want to try posting to one of cycling forums for help.

Sort of got it to work

In BaseCamp, there are a bunch of places to send a route to...
    - directly to the GPS device - for me that is the Garmin 810...
    - to the Internal storage of the GPS device
    - to the memory card (SD 16gb)
    - to a folder on the memory car.

Only when I send the route to the "Internal Storage" of the GPS does it show up as a "Course" that I can use... After talking with Tech Support, it sounds like I should also be able to copy it to the SD card and have it work.. but it doesn't. I'll keep fiddling with it and see what I can some up with.

I do have to say that I am not please with how much work it is taking to get this think to function properly. This device could be made world class if the UI and process for all this stuff were improved.

I like your idea about the file types and locations of the files. It is beginning to feel like that might be the issue. I'll fool with it and post back later.

    Thank you

This is another UI and process thing that could be improved... BaseCamp obviously knows what device I have and so it should be able to say "hey. this file you are sending to the Garmin Edge 810 will not work. Would you like me to convert it for you and put it into the correct location for you? and when I'm done, we will send you a box of cookies for your troubles."
  • After talking with Tech Support, it sounds like I should also be able to copy it to the SD card and have it work.. but it doesn't.

Unsure about your 810 but on most Garmin GPS any routes etc on a card must follow the same folder structure as the device itself. You can't therefore just copy it to the card. You need to create the necessary folders first on the card. Now in many cases if you use Basecamp to send the route it will create the necessary folders, but maybe it doesn't work correctly for the Edge series
