How to make route so that GPSMAP 62s would alert if I am off-course?

Is there a way to make GPS would alert me if I am off-course too much (say more than 0.1 mile) when using the route or tracks? I am using GPSMAP 62s for hiking. I would love to see the GPS beeps me if I am off-course from the planned route or tracks I am following so that I don't have to constantly look at the GPS.

I found there is proximity alert I can setup so that it would beep me when I am near a certain point, but that's not what I want. I want the GPS alert me when I am off-course from the route more than 0.1 mile for example. I am using Mountaineering routing mode.

The feature is actually available under rather hard-to-find place for hikers. It is under Marine menu. It worked when I was using direct routing. However I am not clear if it works with tracks. It doesn't look like, but I might have mistaken.
I do winter hike frequently where often can't see any trails, so this feature is going to be useful if I figure how it really works in detail. It is unfortunate if it really doesn't work with tracks.

    Setting the Off Course Alarm
You can set an alarm to sound when you are off course by a specified distance.
    1. From the main menu, select Setup > Marine Settings.
    2. Select Off Course Alarm > On.
    3. Enter a distance.
    4. Select Done.

I've used the off course alert for years so it's not a new feature. Remember also that there is an "Off Course" data field (for distance to course) and a "To Course" data Field (for direction to course)

Note: The off course alarm does not longer work in newer versions of garmin handhelds with track-navigation. It is not known whether this is a bug or wether garmin has removed this feature deliberately.

The GPSMAP 60 csx gave you an alert when you got off the track used for navigation more then "X" metres.

!!! This does not work anymore on newer handhelds like the GPSMAP 62 oder 64. !!!

The off course alarm does only work when using routes instead of tracks. As routes are not very suited for terrain navigation, there is actually no off course alarm at all
  • I don't recall this ever working with tracks. It works on both my devices on routes but not tracks.

Your second statement is true - but only for manually generated routes. The first statement is definitely not.

Off course alarm does work with tracks on a garmin 60 Csx. So I believe the missing feature on newer GPSr is a bug.

Why should Garmin deliberatley remove such an utmost valuable security feature from track navigation? This does not make sense. Actually I regard the missing feature not only as a bug but also as big flaw. I have many times drawn big benefit from this features while navigating via TracBack with my 60 Csx. Countless times the off course alarm in combination with TracBack has prevented me from moving forward in the wrong direction.

Concerning Off-course-alarm on routes: Yes, there it still works on newer GPSr. But routes are not suitable for precise navigation on ground. Routes-navigation suits for navigation in the air and on sea with long distances between two waypoints. If you use routes navigation as replacement for TracBack (with many points on a quite short route) you will experience the display getting completely cluttered by routepoints symbols and labels, which cannot be hidden / switched off.

Here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?35618-GPSMAP-60CS-screen-cluttered-by-route-point-labels a solution can be found to get rid of the symbols but not of the annoying labels.

So I am obliged to still use TracBack-navigation. And there the "off course alarm" does not work! I am really very disappointed about this fact and I cannot imagine why this has not been corrected long since.

Off course alarm is a serious feature for serious navigation. You do not need this on times square in NY. But you may desperately need this feature on a trekking tour in the wilderness. As I still think of Garmin as manufactorer of serious navigation devices Garmin should solve this bug as soon as possible...
  • Actually the first statement is true, as it's my recollection, but from what you say I accept that some earlier devices had this feature.

However the current way it works isn't a bug as it's how it's designed to work. Should you feel it's something that should change please post your idea here http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/ as this forum is about Basecamp.

Yes, that is what I meant.

    How do you know that?

Ok, thanks a lot. I have done that - see below:

    Information sent to garmin:
    -----------------------

    Bug / Flaw:

Off course alarm does no longer work on newer devices (GPSMAP 62, GPSMAP 64, oregon XXX, montana, etc.) when navigating by tracback.

Previous devices like the GPSMAP 60 Csx did support off course alarm when using tracback.

Off course alarm is a very valuable feature on the trail / in the wilderness, where it often is very easy to go off the desired track / to get lost accidentally.

I appreciate this feature on my GPSMAP 60 Csx very much as it has prevented me from continuing in a wrong direction many times - when I was certain to be on the right track.

It is not fun and can even be dangerous to detect you have been going wrong for kilometres or even just some hundert metres though your gps device easily could have warned you about this cross track error.

I do not know whether garmin has deliberately removed this feature in newer devices or wether this is a just a bug.

But I do know that the lack of this simple feature can be regarded as a big flaw which may even lead to high indemnifiaction claims should there ever occur a bad accident which would easily have been prevented with of course alarm working the way it should.

If Garmin does not correct this flaw I would at least advise strongly to point out to your customers that of course alarm does no longer work on newer devices.
