Beta releases and privacy

In order to install a beta release, Garmin requires that the user accept an agreement to permit the gathering of certain information with a claim that it is non-identifiable.

Just what information is uploaded? Which files?

No files are uploaded. We only take usage statistics. There is no identifying information. We don't take information regrading where routes are made on a map, but we do show what maps are used, and what profiles were used. We take stats like the number of trips created, or the number of adventures uploaded and downloaded. These stats help us in determining where to focus development efforts.

In no way is the information identifying or a breach of privacy. We don't keep things like what waypoints you traveled to, only that you created one.

    Does this ease the concern?

Well, it does answer my question; perhaps I'm a bit overly paranoid about privacy and don't participate in any of the social networks.

    Thanks for the reply.

In that case, Garmin's privacy policy should give you plenty to worry about. :p

    You are overly paranoid.

Don't participate in beta programs, then.

Slurping data unrelated to testing the program from a few beta testers isn't really worth anything. (If you think Garmin is uploading you financial data, you shouldn't be using the internet at all.)

Uploading any data in the background is something any reputable company is required to ask permission for.

You should be more concerned about companies which don't ask (since there isn't anything to uploading without asking).

That doesn't look unreasonable at all.

It's actually a fairly good description of how things work.
