Geocaching Basecamp icons and geocache 'found' icon

Hi,
Can anybody point me in the right direction regarding Geocaching icons.
Currently, I 'get geocaches' into my GSAK database then export the database into Garmin Basecamp. Trouble is the caches only show on the basecamp map as the treasure chest symbol. Is there a way to get the symbols to show as the various types of cache, ie traditional, multi, mystery etc on the Basecamp map?
Also, and probably more importantly for me. After a caching trip, I connect the GPS to the PC (windows 7) and Basecamp. The found caches don't show in Basecamp, I have to manually go through the caches and click them as attempted to manually show the treasure chest icon with the 'found' open lid. This is OK when I can remember which caches we have found, or I have to look at the found list on the GPS (awkward when connected to the PC).
Any help/guidance would be appreciated. I would have thought it must be a straight forward thing to set up.
Regards
Mark
  • You either get the closed or open chest icon. If you use PQs from geocaching.com and import those into Basecamp, then connect your GPS with 'found' geocaches on it Basecamp will show the relevant caches as 'found'. Unfortunately I don't know if the same is true with caches imported via GSAK.

    Thanks,
Trouble is importing PQ's only show the last 5 logs and we sometimes could do with more. So I import into GSAK and refresh with 20 logs per cache. Export this into Basecamp and then to Oregon 650 GPS. The Gps will list the found caches within the filter, but the found ones don't show when I export back to Basecamp.
Is it possible to get the caches to show as other icons in Basecamp other than the opened or shut treasure chest? It would be great to see the caches as traditional or multi icons etc in Basecamp.
  • No, unfortunately not. You can click on Help, Send feedback in Basecamp should you wish to raise this as an issue.

On both my eTrex 30 and GPSMAP 64s, I mark the caches on the handheld as found. Returning home, I connect the handheld to the computer and run BaseCamp. It takes a minute or two for the computer and BaseCamp to recognize the handheld, and when it does, it updates the found status of my caches automatically. Exporting the GPX file from the handheld does not contain the found/unfound status. That is in a separate text file called geocache_visits.txt (or something like that). When BaseCamp detects your handheld, it reads the 'visits' file and updates the caches in BaseCamp that you logged on your handheld. I would expect your Oregon to behave the same way.
  • Is there a simple way to then upload these found caches to geocaching.com? Or does it have to be done manually?
  • Basecamp can't upload your found caches, but instructions for using your field notes are on the geocaching.com website.
