BaseCamp Map Install VS Mapsource Question

I am new to Base Camp and I notice that when you install a map from Map Installer to your GPS or in my case an SD card it only indicates the available space on the SD card. Whereas Map Source indentifies the number of map segments which is the determining factor for the GPS processor as my GPS can only process up to 4000 map segments. Why is it done this way if the unit has a limit?

Also, I notice that the map install .img file is a full download to the card (ie 1.5GB) so if I save this to my hard drive will I be able to just copy this to another card without re-installing this map from Map Install?

Thanks for the link to the post. The part about the map sets or segments I guess isn't relevant since I know there is a limit that the GPS can support. I was just curiuos as to why Map Installer doesn't take this into account like MapSource does.

I see you referenced the advance section for map sets so I will check that as well.

I really like the fact that you can save the .img file and then have that available to transfer to what media you want.

Actually I found the post where a Garmin developer (FALAGAR) stated that MapInstall does show the number of segments. Re-read my original reply :)

One other question, I am looking to get a new all in one desktop or a laptop and I am not sure if I am ready for Windows 8, does BaseCamp work with Windows 8?

I don't have Win8 and don't ever plan to. Some Win8 user have issues with Garmin software (probably .NET related) but it should work. I think MapSource runs on Win8 (I have it on Win7 x64) too :)

Thanks, I am leaning more towards Windows 7/64. I have an iPAD and like it for surfing the web and some of the APPS, just not sure if I am ready to take the Windows 8 plunge. Probably would go with a MAC first...

Personally I view moving to Win8 like diving into 10,000ft of water with a lead weight around my legs :D I prefer to swim, unencumbered, in shallow water (Win7).
