Using Basecamp with Custom Maps

Hello,

I'm using Basecamp with an etrex 20 and need some help understanding when my custom maps will display in Basecamp and the best way to use custom maps between etrax and Basecamp.

The situation here is:

I have City Navigator Europe on a micro SD card which I need to keep in the etrex for turn-by-turn routing when driving. I also want to use some custom maps for Mountainbiking. Usage is about 50/50 so I really can't be swapping the little SD card all the time. It would be get lost and CN Europe is expensive.

I can put Custom maps on either the Internal memory or on the Garmin SD card with CN Europe. Map redraw is unuseably slow on the internal memory but is faster on the SD card so that is where I have put them.

So off I go on my mountainbike and record a track. While I'm out I can see my position on my custom maps. The problem is that when I get home I can't see the custom maps on Basecamp at the same time as my recorded tracks. To see the track I have to click on the entry on the left with the name of the track but that isn't in the location where the custom maps are so I don't see the maps. If I click on the SD card location and/or download them they appear in Basecamp with a number appended for each download but they never appear at the same time as the track.

I tried putting the maps on both internal and SD card memory to get them to display in Basecamp with the track but the etrex seems to use the internal maps as default so the redraw is too slow.

What am I doing wrong?

Maps are all 1024x1024 1.5Mb

Thanks a lot,

Paul
  • Not sure exactly what you mean by 'custom maps'. If you mean OSM maps then any OSM maps on your Etrex should appear in the drop down list in Basecamp along with the CN map. If they don't use JaVaWa's Device Manager to make them visible.

I have CN and OSM mapping on my Etrex 20 and they all display without issue.

Or do you mean this http://www.garmin.com/us/products/onthetrail/custommaps
  • My custom maps are scanned from screenshots and then made into KMZs using GE as per Garmin website instructions.

They work fine on the Etrex but when I view a recorded track in Basecamp it shows over the plain Global Map. Not over my custom maps like it does on the etrex.

  • Ah OK, understand now. You need to copy the custom maps from your Etrex and place it in the same Basecamp list as the track ... then you'll see both together.
  • Hmm...

Well that does definitely work but it's a bit inconvenient having to work out which maps to copy. Am I actually copying the maps on my hard drive? It would lead to massive duplication of data after a while of using if so?

While looking at it I have another question. How would I remove the Global Map road overlay. It's in completely the wrong place and covers up my lovely custom mapping See attachment "Custom maps working 001.jpg". Is it possible?

    Many thanks for your help,

    Paul
  • If you have them on your hard drive then yes, they're the same ones but for Basecamp to see them they need to be in the relevant list.

Your Basemap is showing due to the transparency setting on your custom maps, my custom maps are set to a higher transparency than my other maps so they always appear on top. I'm not sure if it will work, as redoing the transparency isn't trivial, but have you tried View, Basic map in the Basecamp toolbar and deselecting it?
  • Hello again,

Not sure what you mean by "If you have them on your hard drive then yes, they're the same ones..."

Does this mean that by copying into other lists I am making duplicates of the files themselves or just linking to them in Basecamp? It makes a big difference in wasted disk space!

I can redo the transparency setting by remaking the KMZs. Actually I quite like having CN Europe on top so I'll play with it and see what I get.

Great support. thank you - I really appreciate it!

  • Moving them into lists means that they're then saved within the Basecamp database so yes, it'll take up extra space. Custom maps however aren't that large so shouldn't really be an issue. If you're that concerned though you could simply import them when you need to use them, then delete them from Basecamp before you exit.
