Basecamp error message "an error occurred when loading topo U.S. 100K maps"

This is a plea to fix a known issue in Garmin Basecamp. This is a common issue. A search on the internet will takes only moments to find that this is a problem that is occurring often for many people. What happens is, when you plug your GPS into your computer, "mine is an Oregon 550T" the topo maps fail to load in the basecamp program and you get an error message that there was a problem loading the maps. This renders Basecamp basically useless. There is a fix to this issue. you can follow this path, (C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Garmin\BaseCamp\CardProductCache) and delete the folder named CardProductCache. This will resolve the issue. You will now be able to load topo maps and the program will work as intended, for a while. Then, at a later date you will have to repeat the process. Every time you do this Basecamp has to reinitiate maps and this takes about ten minutes. PLEASE, you know the problem. You know that the cache has to be cleared. Update the program so that people don't have to keep doing this. This is not a minor inconvenience, this is a major program flaw. It is costing you business, I certainly can't recommend Garmin anymore until there is a mapping program that works reliably. Thank you, I hope someone in a postion to fix this actually reads this.

Having said that I've been using Basecamp for years and never needed to clear the cache so unsure what your issue is, maybe someone else will know. Do you 'safely eject' your Oregon each time, that's the only thing I can think of that could cause issues.

I will have to do some research, however, but I was under the impression that this issue was fixed. I do not, however, remember if it got into the 4.3 or 4.2.5. Basically it is possible, however unlikely, that map tile data can be corrupted. Also other data in maps can be corrupted. If something happens during the loading process of a map from a GPS and the files are not written correctly, the maps will never load again. I would check out the 4.3 and see if this corrects your issue. And basically what we have done is problematically do what the user above is saying... destroy the errored map data and start over.

Well I can tell you it isn't fixed. This is the third time I have had to do this. I am running 4.3.5 and a Oregon 450T. Please fix!!!

    Still Not Fixed

You are right. The problem is not fixed. Garmin tech has told me that it is a corruption of the CardCacheProduct Cache Folder. But everytime I plug in a different model GPS, the error reoccurs. Obviously, it is a limitation to the Basecamp program to only recognize one type of GPS at a time.

It has been 3 years and no forward motion on the issue.

  • I have 5 GPS that I use with Basecamp and have never seen this error. I suspect there is an issue with your device or PC.
