SD card causes Etrex to drop out of Basecamp

Fairly new to this and not very tech savvy.
Have managed to move maps from my Etrex 20 internal memory and install them onto the SD card.
Seemed to be going well but now my device completely drops off Basecamp while transferring data from Sd card upon start up.
Do I have a corrupt map in there ?
I have more maps I want to load onto the card from Basecamp. I have a 16GB card installed.
I have been transferring maps by dragging and dropping from internal memory to SD card on Basecamp. Then delete them from internal memory.
Should I be doing this differently ?
Once I get the maps I want onto the card is there a way to keep the maps from SD card from transferring that data
each time I attach the device? Don't need that loaded since maps already exist in My Collection folder.

My goal is to have all maps on SD card and use internal memory for waypoints, tracks and routes only.
Help please.
  • Shouldn't be an issue, I keep all the maps on my card also. Note that Basecamp doesn't 'transfer' map data from your Etrex or card, what it does is index the data. Your best bet is to keep the Etrex connected until that completes, it is still going on while the green bars under the Etrex/card are moving in the left hand pane. Once that's done your Etrex will connect without being indexed in future.

Having said that if your Etrex is disconnecting from Basecamp that shouldn't be happening. If the maps already exist in your My Collection I'd delete them all off the card and see if that resolves the issue. Then use Basecamp to reinstall the maps onto the card one at a time.

Okay, I deleted all maps from my SD card. Did this from the "My Computer" window. Then launched Basecamp to begin resending maps from "my collection" to the SD card by dragging and dropping. First map worked, second one did not. Etrex dropped completely off basecamp.
Deleted that map from my collection and disconnected etrex from computer. Reconnected device and deleted failed map from the "my computer" window.
Launched Basecamp and tried transferring another map. It worked as the first one did. Tried to transfer a third map and etrex dropped off Basecamp again.
Repeated process of eliminating that map. Launched Basecamp and now etrex drops off Basecamp before the initial indexing of installed maps on card can complete.
So, now I can't transfer any maps unless I completely delete all maps on SD card and start over again. This is getting monotonous
Could there be interference from my Norton antivirus software blocking the transfer of data?
I tried turning it off the first time and didn't seem to make a difference.
  • Not sure about Norton being the issue, I wouldn't have thought so. Perhaps a bad card? Are you able to try with a different one? I guess the other problem could be a bad usb port, and note you shouldn't connect through a usb hub as that can cause issues.

I have 4 maps installed on my card in my Etrex 20 and have never had the issue you describe.

One more time I deleted all maps. Called Garmin support and talked to Josh. We opened Basecamp and sent two maps one by one from "my collection" to the SD card.
The difference this time instead of dragging and dropping I right clicked the map and selected the "send to" option. Then highlighted the SD card and pressed enter.
Loaded the two presumed good maps that way and closed out Basecamp. Disconnected Etrex 20 from computer, turned it on to verify maps were loaded thru the settings option.
Reattached device and launched Basecamp. This time the SD card did not go thru the long transfer process. Folder was almost instantly available.
Downloaded two more maps from Birdseye imagery and made transfer to SD card. All went well thru another disconnect / reconnect test.
So, fingers crossed that all appears to be working as it should. Only thing I did differently was how I sent maps from "my collection" to the SD card.
    Thanks for your suggestions.
  • Good to hear. Not sure why using a different method works for you but glad you can now enjoy your Etrex.
