How to install maps in Basecamp without setup.exe of install.exe?

I try to solve a apparantly simple problem:

I download my province map (OSM BBBike) and stored it temporary at partition F:\ . However it consists of only a xxx.img file, there is no setup.exe or install.exe supplied, what you often find when downloading OSM from other websites.

I can put the map without any problem at the microSDcard in my Dakota20. When I connect my gps to the pc, that mSDcard is named J:\ and using Basecamp I can access the map. The map is in Basecamp on the left part of the screen under Toestellen (Devices) --> Dakota20 --> memory card. But the pc and the gps have to be connected by cable.

Without cable I find no possibility finding the map in Basecamp. To do so I put the xxx.img file in C:\Garmin\Maps, between the other maps. Those other maps appear in Basecamp, I ever installed those there using a setup.exe or install.exe file.

My question: how can I have the map visible in Basecamp without setup procedure, just by placing the xxx.img file at C: (or D: or …)?? I know about making a virtual device (using JaVaWa Device Manager) but I want to avoid virtualising: very laborious. Can it be done much simpler? I can't imagine this is impossible! Editting an *.ini file or editting the registry or so??
  • No it can't .. you can either install it onto a usb stick or sd card and use that instead of your GPS, or create the virtual disk.

    Reading maps in BaseCamp

BaseCamp will also read maps on a memory card plugged directly into your PC.
You can also rename the img file to whatever you want, should you have multiple maps on the card.
Use JaVaWa Device Manager to make maps visible in Basecamp if they are not already so. You can also change the map name as it shows up in Basecamp using Device Manager.
