Basecamp - Collections List

Very new to Basecamp.

On the left is a list of all the addresses I imported

There are over 200 addresses in various cities across a particular US state

The Nuvi 2460 can only handle 30 points per route

I want to create routes for all 200 points so I have to break them down into multiple 30 point routes.

Problem is: The addresses are all sorted by the address number. I need them sorted by either the zip code or geo tag (Lat Lon) because I cannot select points near each other from the way the list is presented.

Let me make sure I understand... you important 200 addresses... as waypoints into basecamp? Can you post here a screen shot of what it is you're doing? It sounds like you imported waypoints from your device that just need to have their names changed so that they sort in the way you want them to.

    First, thanks for the assistance.

Well, actually what I did was created a CSV file that was generated from GPSVisualizer.com, then imported that file into Basecamp.
Heres one of the actual line items.....
28.415531,-82.246936,"17239 Citrus Valley Rd,Dade City,FL,33523,US","17239 Citrus Valley Rd, Dade City, Pasco, FL, US",

I imported about 200 lines with similar lines.
It imported fine, but in the collections list example above all I see is....
    17239 Spring Valley Rd

Imagine 200 lines like that. It sorts them on the 17239 (street address number)
How on Earth would I pick addresses within one single zip code if all I can see in the list is the street address?
The list needs to be sorted by zip code so that when I select 30 from the list to transfer to the Nuvi for routing, they are at least in the same zip code.

Can you please post a screen shot of exactly what you see? It would help me if/when I open a case for your issue.
  • I’m not exactly sure how you got your data or how you got it into BaseCamp. I wasn’t aware that it could import a .csv file. Anything the programmers could do in the future would depend on whether anything gets entered into Postal Code box as seen on the Waypoint Properties (double click on a waypoint in the bottom left pane). I’m not sure that field will contain anything since your data went thru a third party application.

The objects in the lower left pane are sorted by object name or object symbol. One solution to the problem would be to alter the name outside of BaseCamp so that the Zip Code appears at the front of the name. If the csv file opens into Excel with one waypoint per line the functions in Excel would make the task fairly easy.

Options within BaseCamp will involve taking the 200 addresses and parsing them into multiple smaller lists. I gather you imported the waypoints directly into My Collections. First I would create a new folder and a new list inside the new folder. Send all of the waypoints to the new list and select it. I will give you a couple of options on how to do the parsing. Both will require having an empty list to send selected waypoints and then removing them from this first list. For clarity I will refer to the first list as “My 200”.

To parse the data, you could to it by Latitude or by City/Metropolitan Area. The problem with Latitude is that points may not be the closest in space (e.g. the point 4,5 is closer to 2,2 than is 3,100 while the sort order will be 2,2; 3,100; 4,5).

    Parsing by Latitude:
    1. Click on the tab in the middle of the left side of the Map Pane to swap that pane with the one on the lower left.
    2. Click on the Flag to show only waypoints.
    3. Click on Position to sort by that column. A second click will reverse the sort order if desired.
    4. Click on the first waypoint and shift-click on the last one you want to parse. Right-click on a highlight waypoint and send to an empty list. Right-click again and choose Remove from “My 200”.
    5. Create a new empty list and repeat. “My 200“ will continue to decrease in size.

    Parsing by City/Metropolitan Area:
    1. Right Click on the first waypoint in the lower left pane and choose Show on Map.
    2. Use the mouse wheel or – key to zoom out until you see the general area. Use the Selection tool (arrow) to select all the points in the general area. Imagine a box containing the area of interest. Move the arrow to the upper left corner, hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse to the lower right corner and release. All the points in the shade area will be selected.
    3. Right click one of the highlighted points on the map or in the lower left pane and Send the points to an empty list.
    4. Right click and again and Remove from My 200.
    5. Create a new empty list and repeat.

Either method will likely require some adjusting of the lists (i.e. combining lists, breaking a list into smaller lists, moving point(s) from one list to another). But this should get you started.
