Dividing a Route

I have searched the last couple of hours trying to find two things. One, a detailed tutorial or manual for Basecamp, which I did find. And, how to divide a route into segments. I am planning a trip to Nova Scotia and the total trip is 5,100 miles. I have a Zumo 550, which of course, will not load the whole trip. I can not figure out how the divide tool works. When I highlight the route and click on the divide tool it arbitrarily highlights a section of the route between points. My main question is how do I select the section of route I want to divide. I could go back and create multiple, shorter routes but that would be very time consuming.
  • Just move the divide tool to where you want to split the route, then left click.
  • I wish it was that simple. When I try this it arbitrarily selections a section of the route to divide.
  • No it doesn't ... you can change it by moving the divide tool. The selection will change depending on where the divide tool is. Note though that it can only divide it at a via point that is already in the route. If you want to divide it elsewhere first insert a via point where you want to split the route, then split it.
  • I don't use BaseCamp (but MapSource) but here's what I do.

    • Create one long route for the multi-day trip.
    • Look at the route properties and find a point about 500 miles (that is one day of driving) from the last stop point.
    • Look for lodging around that point.
    • Make a waypoint for that lodging.
    • Drag'n'drop the route line to that waypoint.
    • Repeat the above as necessary until the destination is reached.
    • Split the one long route into per-day sections.

    Now the above assumes that

    • You want a fixed stop point per day (i.e. know where you'll be sleeping). I know many bikers don't.
    • That you can achieve a certain mileage per day. That depends on the terrain, traffic and so on.

I've been using the same general workflow for about a decade and it works for me.

You're lucky. Mapquest gpx route files will not load on my 2460. Acts as if they are not there.

No. I deliberately researched and purchased units that support routes :D

I've been using Garmin devices and software for over 13 years.
