Forum "Sticky" request for Win XP users

As Basecamp 4.2.5 is the last version that will work with Windows XP can someone either post a new "Sticky" with a title something like "Basecamp 4.2.5 download - Latest release for Windows XP" - or rename the existing "Sticky".

Also, when a full version of Basecamp 4.3 is released, can the Basecamp download page of the main Garmin web site keep a download button for 4.2.5 with an explanation about it's use for XP.

There's probably going to be some new Garmin users who still use XP and don't know about this forum for guidance; and many existing users (me included) who still use XP on an older laptop for example and want to reinstall Basecamp.

Sadly, we don't control what the website does, but I will run this up the flagpole and I will see what we can get done with those guys. They've been pretty good at working with us in the past. As to your other request, I can take care of that.

FYI Garmin does have links to older software for older OS'es etc.

    One has to dig however.

I'd think that BC 4.2.5 would appear as a "Legacy Version" as per other apps.

Understood but the XP support stoppage is a very new concept, and there are still a number of users on that OS. I think we will sticky it for a while as it is not really legacy software as of yet. We also will be continuing to support 4.2.5 going forward for critical issues.

Perhaps at Garmin. Microsoft has been shouting it from their rooftop for years. Only six days left now (XP support ends April 8th). That said, like many others, I'll continue using XP on one box. I'm still running Win2K SP4, just fine, on another :)

When I started this thread I was thinking about helping out the not so computer savvy users of Garmin products. It just seems like a sensible and easy option to say "If you're running Windows XP download this" and "If you're running Windows 7 or later download this". By the way - which version would you need for Win Vista?

If you are computer savvy and had reason to still run XP then I suppose you could download Basecamp 4.2.5 and just keep the file on a hard drive for use later. I don't specifically need a PC with XP to run Basecamp. But I do have some hardware that only has drivers available for Windows 95 to XP - a Canon film scanner, an Epson flatbed scanner, and an M-Audio external audio interface. I'm not going to spend a whole lot of cash replacing those - Ill just keep the older laptop with XP for when I need to use them.

To be honest, I don't need the latest version of Basecamp. I just use it to keep a record of tracks from my GPSmap 62s and plan some walks/hikes using British OS 25k Birdseye Select maps. I don't use it to plan road routes or need Trip Planner, I don't do Adventures and I've never used the search function. I'm just waiting for a version that allows me to turn off that annoying bubble that always obscures the part of the map where I want to put my next waypoint ! ! !

And yes . . . my middle name is Grumpy!
  • 4.3 has a better 'bubble' but still not perfect, would be good if there was an option to turn it on/off or get the info via a right click (should you ever need it)

4.3 will run on Vista. "Need" is relative term :)

BTW today my middle name is "Sleepy" :p
