Basecamp queries

There are a couple of problems that I'm having with Basecamp that I'd appreciate some guidance on - I can't find anything on googled or this site on them but I think that may be because I'm not describing them properly.

1) I've created quite a few routes and the map is starting to look very 'busy'. I'm assuming there must be a way of keeping a record of the route but not displaying it on the map? The only option I can find is to delete from all lists. That there is a 'show on map' option implies that there is also a 'remove from map but keep', hidden somewhere.

2) When I'm adding points to a route a small box appears close to the pen icon showing the name of the viapoint and 'search near centre of map'. This takes a couple of seconds to clear and often covers where I want to put the next viapoint. Can I turn this off?

Thanks

Ian
  • 1. Show on map simply refocuses the map to centre what you've selected. To avoid clutter create folders/lists and select as appropriate ... Basecamp will only display the one you select.

    2. No, but it works better in 4.3 and that will be out shortly, it's in beta at the moment.

Now I understand. I'm not used to having to be organized - Basecamp will be good for me!

I'll give the beta a try.

Thanks for your quick reply and help.

OK, at last I think I've got this!!

I'm route planning around the Peak District so in My Collection I have a folder called Peak District which contains a List called Waypoints containing all the Peak District waypoints I might ever need and a copy of the 1:25k Dark Peak map I've downloaded as a Birdseye Select map, and a List called 1:25k Dark Peak which just contains a copy of the 1:25k Dark Peak Birdseye Select map. If I click on the Waypoints list then I see a 1:25k Dark Peak map with the way points shown on it and if I click on the 1:25k Dark Peak list I see a clean copy of the map with no waypoints.

To create a new route I select the waypoints I'll need and a copy of the Dark Peak map and send these to a new list called what ever I want the route to be called. Then I create a new route, add the waypoints and use the pencil symbol to add viapoints.

I seem to have to keep a copy of the 1:25k map in each route List or I can only magnify to 1:50k (I have a 1:50k GB OS card).

This seems to work - have I finally got it right?

Ian - (from another Ian) - Yes I'm with you on this aspect of Basecamp.

It would seem that you have to have a copy of the map in each list or folder if you want individual routes or tracks in separate lists. I've got lots of tracks recorded in the same areas in North Wales and it gets very messy with several tracks overlapping each other. The only way to check which track goes where is to click on one so it becomes highlighted then click on another to see where that one goes. If you have tracks or routes organised in that way it then becomes difficult to view and compare say two or three tracks in the same area. The Memory-Map software works much better in this respect as you can tick or un-tick each track or route as you need to see or not see them, but then you'd need Memory-Map maps.

Otherwise Basecamp works for me apart from that annoying balloon that you can't stop popping up as you're trying draw a route! Have fun!
  • Yes, BirdsEye Select maps have to be in the folder you've selected or you won't see it. The 'annoying balloon pop up' has been modified in 4.3, only a beta is released at the moment but expect the new version sometime soon.
  • Folders and lists are a means of both organizing data and filtering what will be visible on the map. Only the items on a list will or sub-lists for folder will appear on the map.

However, lists do not contain copies of objects like waypoints, routes etc. They contain references to objects. By that I mean when a waypoint appears on three lists, there are not three copies of the waypoint, but three references to a single waypoint. If you make a change to the waypoint on one list, that change will appear to occur on all lists. This is important to understand when one goes to build new routes based on old ones. You will need to duplicate, not copy, to create a new object to edit if you wish to keep the old one unaltered.

This concept of lists leads to different types of deletes. Objects can be removed from a list only or from a list and the database (and therefore all other lists). Lists can be removed while maintaining all objects on the list in the database or removed along with all unique objects (those that appear on the list to be removed and only that list – note: My Collections is not a list). Occasionally, you will unintentionally keep objects you don’t want. They will likely show up in the Unlisted Data folder where they can be assigned to list or removed from the database.

So some lists, for organizing, will be more or less permanent. Others may only serve a temporary function and either it or its contents will be removed at the end of the session.
