How do you change the database location

In Basecamp release 4.2.1 (I think) a function for changing the location of the database was added. Where do I find that option? Does this change the location for installed maps as well as routes and tracks etc.?
  • The map location doesn't change, just the database. You'll find in somewhere in Options, not at my PC at the mo so can't say exactly where.

...not at my PC at the mo...

    Posting via a phone/tablet? :p

Ctrl-O (Edit, Options), General tab, Database Options. Use the + button to add/create a new database.

Note that creating/adding just makes a new blank database, BC itself will not copy/move an existing one. You have to do that manually in Windows Explorer etc.

OK. Thanks. I'd found the Database Options but couldn't work out how use the + button . . . - as you say it does not save a new version of the database in a different location - you have to copy your existing database to the new location then Browse to load it.

However if you just copy the database folder when you load the database from the new location all the .jnx Birdseye files and Klm files are missing. You have to copy all the contents of the Basecamp folder (C:\Users\username\AppData\Garmin\Basecamp on a Win7 PC) to the new location then everything is OK.

Another issue has arisen though . . .

I’ve built a new PC - Win 7 64 Pro with 2 hard drives – C drive for OS and programs and D drive for data. My old PC is the same configuration but with Win XP 64 on which I have Basecamp with some Birdseye Select maps installed (British OS 25k) with everything working fine.

I did a Basecamp backup on the old PC and installed the latest Basecamp and restored data on the new PC. Success so far and I've now relocated the database and maps to the Data drive as discussed above.

On my old PC I had installed the Empty World Map (http://www.anpo.republika.pl/files/EmptyWorld.7z) as recommended by POPEJ (see thread https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?27667-How-do-I-selectively-turn-on-off-custom-maps-and-birdseye-in-Basecamp/page3 for my reasons for wanting this). When I run the installer on the new PC it opens a command prompt window to run a .bat file but fails with several "Error: Access denied" messages. I have administrator rights on the PC and all rights are set to "allowed". Any suggestions?

No idea sorry. I've never found a need for it.

PS: My BC databases are on D: as well.
  • I have a question concerning shared databases for BC.

I finally set up my second family PC with BC and tried to set up a "shared" db.

I created a shared folder on my normal laptop.
I pointed my db selector in bc to that folder.
I restored a backup of my db to that folder.
Everything seems fine on my laptop.

I go to my family pc.
I pointed my db selector in bc to that folder.
It restarted and looks great. I have the same info on both sessions.

What I find is that changes made do not read on the other computer.

So, my question is: Do I still have 2 separate dbs in the same folder? Or should changes made on my laptop reflect on the PC?

What I'm trying to figure out is if I should expect this, or do I need to figure out what I did wrong.

    Thanks.

So you created a shared folder on one PC and browsed (over the network) to the folder from a 2nd machine but BC doesn't see it. Could be that BC doesn't support shared folders over a network. I'd try mapping the shared folder (on the 2nd machine) to a drive letter and see if that works.

To assign a drive letter to a network computer or folder
  • No, I was able to assign the db in bc to the same folder for both computers, with no issue.

It seems that once established on either computer from the same folder, they then grew/changed independently.

Should I expect them to change in synch, or is it basecamp's behavior to not use a shared db, even if it's in a shared folder?

In that case I suspect you didn't browse to the same place on both machine.

I'm sharing BC databases between (local) users just fine. It does work but you have to choose exactly the right folder. Also are the versions of BC the same?

For example let's say I create a folder "My shared BC database" and select that in BC. BC will create numerous sub-folders under that

    Database
    GeotaggedPhotos
    JnxFiles
    SavedSearches

In subsequent instances of BC one opens "My shared BC database" and not "Database". However different versions of BC uses different folders in ""Database".
  • I am using the same version of BC on both, but I suspect I am not selecting the correct folder, if this is what works for you.

Using your example above, I chose "My shared BC database".

I thought I tried selecting "Database", but was not fruitful. If you think this might be my error, I shall try again.

That won't work. BC will just create new

    Database
    GeotaggedPhotos
    JnxFiles
    SavedSearches

folders under Database. You must select the folder (whatever that is) above the Database folder (i.e. one level up).
