Something is changing my Routes!!!

I have used Mapsource / TOPO and a GPS 12MAP since it was introduced many years ago. I used it almost daily to prowl the mountains and deserts as well as cross the nations highways therefore I was very familiar with basics of that software and device. (I didn't use all the fancy bells and whistles, I just created a route, activated it and followed the arrow)

That old GPS finally died recently so I purchased a Garmin 62s and downloaded Basecamp. The first thing I did was update all the software and I have spent days reading instructions, forums and watching videos trying to learn something about the new system. I am using 2 computers, 1) PC w/Win XP sp3 & 2) HP Laptop w/Win 7 64.

I was able to construct 3 routes using Mapsource that will take me about 1500 miles from Utah to Texas (tomorrow) by marking the cities that I want to drive through. When I moved the routes to basecamp then to my 62s, something changed the routes. As an example, the first 100 miles of the route I had laid out was changed to move the route 80 miles west and the route is now 260 miles long.

I'm sure its my lack of knowledge of this new system so I'd appreciate any help is locking in my route as I want it. I am leaving for Texas tonight and do not have a lot of time to be messing with this.

Have you tried transferring the routes directly from MapSource to your 62S?

If MapSource won't detect your 62S (I'd think it should) then save the route(s) to GPX file(s) and copy those manually to the GPX folder on your 62S.

I have the routes on the GPS and they look like what I created however it is laborious and time consuming to zoom in and review the routes for the whole 1500 miles using the slow scrolling and small screen on the GPS.

I break multi-day routes into smaller (per-day) routes. That said you can simulate driving routes on the GPS unit.

This is for the Oregon x50 models but your 62S should be similar.

Your speed will increase by 10mph increments until you get to about 1150mph.
