Waypoints

Hi first post here, I've been lurking the forum but can not find an answer for my issue. I need to transit for the first time through sections of mountainous rural roads that are very twisty, with lots of crossings and lack of proper signage, were you can get disoriented easily. I want to force the gps unit to show me a predetermined track because the route that it generates automatically between two points is awful.

I created a route with base camp and as I said the roads are very twisty so I had to define lots of waypoints to force the program to create the route that I want. I will not be stopping at those waypoints. The problem is that I run a trial with a route that I know and I noticed that sometimes the unit doesn't give you directions with enough time or distance and you can easily pass one of the waypoints. Sometimes is not until you are exactly on top of one of the waypoint for the unit to draw the route to the next way point. If you use a predetermined track the unit doesn't find a new route for the missed waypoint. How can I program the route so the unit give me advice with enough time or distance.

    That's a bummer.

But Hey! I think I found a workaround solution with what Edserrano said. In basecamp you set all the waypoints you need to force it to create the route as you want it (the profile doesn't matter). Then select all of them and tell the program to create the route. A new item that represents the route is created. But this time delete all the waypoints and leave just the object representing the route and then send just that object to the device, never mind don't delete the waypoint aybe they will be needed later just send the route object to the device. I will test it tomorrow.
  • Hi 3D1l,
At last, someone who is having difficulty with that model (or generation) as well as me - I thought I was going daft. I've a Zumo 550 and the routes using waypoints works fine, it doesn't even matter if I slightly miss a waypoint, it just recalculates and gets on with it to the next one. My car Garmin 2545 (uses apps for routes) used as a back-up sometimes is a different beast - it seems to treat each segment of a route (waypoint to waypoint) as a separate route and if I miss the waypoint it keeps trying to re-route me back to that point before continuing. Cost me an hour of wrong turns in France last year !
What if - in Basecamp - you use the route shaping tool to force the route onto the roads/paths you want to use rather than using waypoints ? (use waypoints for start/finish as usual).
    cheers
    James
  • Yep, afraid that's how the 2012 and earlier models with trip planner worked, whether a future software update will change that who knows. From the 2013 models onwards that has changed, as posted above, and by using shaping points that don't alert you can also skip them without any issues as the nuvi doesn't insist that you visit those.

I bought it at Costco under a 30 days return policy I'm going to return it. :( Do all models on that price range have that problem? Well this is getting off topic I will ask what unit to buy in the other sub-forums.

    Thanks for your help.

One last thing for the sake of others, it doesn't matter if you remove the waypoint and send just the route object. Each waypoint is embedded in the route and sorry didn't catch the thing about the year f the model, will be looking for 2013 or newer models. Thanks!

Get a unit that accepts TRACKS!!!

Many units that Garmin sells have problems with rural road routing, but it is also a map problem from NavTeq. Using tracks completely eliminates the problem, but at the expense of not getting directional prompts.....you just have to look at the map. You can use BC's route to track function.

Just bought a new unit (2013) and I can confirm that now Trip Planner works the way it should, it shows the whole route instead of just every leg of the trip. Just like old "Routes" but I would say it is better now. Trips made in Basecamp load directly into the unit without having to import the route within the unit and lots and lots of other goodies that people like me who like to create our own routes will like.
  • Good to know you're happy with it ... I certainly am with my 2013 nuvi (a 2508) ... and the great thing as far as I'm concerned is that as well as displaying the whole route (and working) like the old route planner it also accepts do not alert/shaping points from Basecamp :)
