Does anybody knows if the newer Garmin units (Trip Planner) still only shows "a leg" at a time when you import a route with many waypoints created in Basecamp?
No they don't, from 2013 onwards (I have one) the whole trip is shown and it acts more like the 'route' on the older nuvis. They also have the advantage that shaping/do not alert points actually work ... you don't get an alert and if you skip them the GPS doesn't mind :)

Do you happen to know if the Nuvi 2597 has this ability, to show the whole route as one?
