Interrupting/re-entering a route

I have created a main route for a trip (Route 66). There are several side-trips programmed as separate stand-alone routes. A POI has been placed where each alternate route intersects the main route (with proximity alarm). When I leave the main route, load and follow the alternate route, I have a problem restarting the main route in the correct location when I return to it.

Is there an efficient way of getting back onto the main route and resuming travel? Should I just brute force it and break the main route into shorter segments that end at each alternate route? Anything more elegant?

It is actually the latter. When I originally created my routes, I added waypoints to mark historic and other interesting locations on or near the routes. At some point in time, I believe I exported these waypoints as POI's in .gpx format. My thinking, at the time, was that I needed the .gpx files to be able to see these locations as I traveled the route.

As I understand it now, the POI's are independent of any route, and could be used as a destination without a pre-defined route. They can be accessed through the pull down list of custom POIs in the GPS.

The waypoints are normally specific to a defined route, and will be loaded as part of the routing information when a route is selected. Correct?

Sorry, previous response was to thread #10. Didn't realize there were more threads added on following pages.
  • On my GPSmap 62s, if I start a route late or "mid-stream", it knows where I am and figures out where/how to continue the route (as long as I'm still going in the same route direction).
