Using BaseCamp Trip Planner with eTrex 10

Hi - very new to all this, I just bought an eTrex 10. I have downloaded BaseCamp and wanted to use trip planner. Every time I try, I get message:
The trip planner is not compatible with the current map. Please choose another map to use the trip planner.

Any suggestions? It sounded from the product description on the eTrex 10 that it would be able to use BaseCamp to do trip planning. I wanted to route out some running and bike trips with this software. Thanks much! BH

ps - I tried searching the forums, kept getting messages that I wasn't specific enough and shouldn't use queries that would select the whole database - sorry if this is a repeat.
  • Your Etrex 10 just comes with a very basic Basemap that is not updateable, so that's why I suspect you're getting that message. You can use Basecamp though to send routes, waypoints etc to your GPS.

So to use BaseCamp to send routes, I would have to find routes someone else created and send that? I can't create a route (since I get that message when I try to create a new route)? Sorry - just wanted to be clear. I did download some adventures that I found near me, also some geocaches. And THANKS much SUSSAMB!
  • No, you should be able to create routes in Basecamp. You said you get that message when you use Trip Planner. Instead use the create route tool. Have a look at the video here about creating routes http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/training/basecamp/

You may struggle though as you'll only have the Basecamp basemap, or the basemap from your Etrex, neither are ideal for creating routes.
  • eTrex 10 Specs

    Basemap Yes
    Preloaded maps no
    Ability to add maps No

    Built-in memory no
    Accepts data cards no

As SUSSAMB said your eTrex 10 comes with a crude world basemap. That has major roads but little else. One could use that to create routes but IMO they'd be pretty useless.

That said you can load point-to-point (as the crow flies) routes into your unit.

The BaseCamp trip planner is intended for use with devices that have detailed road maps in them. Your unit neither has such maps nor can it.

Ahhhhh - it suddenly becomes clearer. THANKS all for the inputs. Yes, I should be able to create a rough route using the routes instead of trip planner. Thanks so much for the assistance! BH
