Change waypoint appearance on Map

Well there's nothing wrong as such, but there's no standard between codes sent from various routing/mapping programs and Garmin devices, including between Garmin devices and Garmin programs, eg Basecamp, which doesn't help. That's why you get the erratic behaviour you're seeing.

If you read through the thread I pointed you at you will see that you can create custom symbols that will replace the ones installed on your Oregon. I have 'invisible' symbols set for blue pins and flags as I use Basecamp, so that I then don't get the 'blue flag' problem you describe. You will need to experiment on your Oregon to see what works best for you.

Well this has been a complaint for 10+ years as has been said again and again and again.

The computer software contains all (99% of the time) current device waypoint icons but devices don't. Devices have some (and it varies) subset. Many devices replace an icon they don't have with the Blue Flag.

On many Outdoor models one can create custom waypoint symbols as a workaround to this problem.

BTW there are a number of solutions.

• Determine what icons/symbols your device(s) implement and ONLY use those
  
• Create custom symbols for icons your model doesn't provide and use those.
  
• Create a custom symbol for the Blue Flag to mask the issue.

When you create a route using Waypoints and send it to a device, Garmin will send the Route and the Waypoints in the Route as separate objects (yes, the waypoints appear in the route also).

I have an outdoor device, but not an Oregon. On my device, Routes sent to the device can not be edited (nor are they calculated). This behavior is likely due to a problem users were having with Routes prepared in BaseCamp changing when activated on some devices. This is also how older devices without Auto-Routing capabilities handled calculated routes.

Waypoints sent to the device can be edited. When you make a change to a Waypoint symbol, it affects the Waypoint, but not the corresponding point in the Route. By that, I mean that the symbol is altered in the waypoint point file, but not in the route file.

Now for the kicker; my device always ignores the Symbols in all routes and always uses, what I assume is the default via point symbol, a blue pin. Symbols in routes are only visible when a route is viewed or active. The rest of the time, they are not shown on the map.

On my device, the default symbol for a Waypoint is a blue flag. If a Waypoint with an unrecognized Symbol is sent to the device, it will revert to blue flag.

To the best of knowledge, there is no way to set a default via or waypoint symbol on my device. You can reduce clutter to some extent by changing the Zoom Level for Waypoints on the Map set-up, but you can’t do anything for Via Points in an active Route.

OK, another Stuart here,

On my laptop computer, using Basecamp version 4.2.5

I upload the day's track to Basecamp. It appears as a magenta line with black dots for the points (via points I would guess?)

I convert that track to a route. The points on that new are black dots.

I upload that newly created route to my Zumo 665.

It appears as a magenta line with no waypoints showing. Just the magenta line.

So,

Last night I'm working with a fairly new Basecamp user. His complaint, he uploads his day's track to Basecamp. Erases it from his Nuvi 550.

Then uploads that same track from Basecamp back to his Nuvi 550 and all the points on the track show up as orange flags.

He's using version 4.2.5

So OK, I show him how to create a route from that track. Then we upload that new route to his Nuvi 550.

Hmmm...all the via points on that new route are orange flags.

OK, so I connect my Zumo 665 to his laptop, it is recognized.

I upload the newly created route to my Zumo. And all the via points are orange flags.

With all the orange flags, it would seem very difficult to see enough of the screen to navigate.

So, it would appear that what the created route, or uploaded track shows for the via points is coming from Basecamp.

My Basecamp uploads them not showing (invisible)

His Basecamp uploads them as orange flags. Turns out another friend is having exactly the same thing happen every time.

So where in Basecamp can one change how uploaded track or route via points are displayed?

I'm sorry, I read through the whole link before I posted, and then again when I got your response.

Guess I'm not seeing what I should read.

Alternatively try the trick at post # 20, I now use that on my Etrex 20 so instead of the flags/pins I get an 'invisible point' (oops, sorry you can't, that only works for handhelds)
