BaseCamp can't find city or address

BaseCamp 4.2.5 can't do the most basic work of a map program. i.e. find an address quickly and accurately.

I select Find Addresses and enter "Plano TX" and BaseCamp can't find the city.

If I enter the full address 5945 W. Parker Rd Plano Texas it still can't find the location. Google finds it is less than 5 seconds.

BaseCamp eventually gives me locations such as "2498 E Plano"

I seldom had these problems with Mapsource. If Garmin can't do a better job of mapping I will be forces to unload my 3 Garmin units on ebay and switch to a GPS company that knows how to provide map software.
  • While the Basecamp search is different to Mapsource I've never yet failed to find an address that exists on the map using Basecamp, but you need to know how to do it effectively.

First just check that Plano is shown on the map you're using in Basecamp, I assume it's CN NA? Type Plano in the search box top right. Does Basecamp find it? If not confirm that's the name as on the map? If still nothing check to see if your GPS finds it using the same map? If not, then it's a map problem, not Basecamp.

Incidentally Basecamp easily finds West Parker Rd, Plano, Tx on a OSM map that I have.

To find an address hit Ctrl + Alt + F. Enter Plano in the Location box until the list populates and you can select Plano Tx. Now ensure Addresses is selected in Type then enter 5945 Parker in the search box and hit enter. Does that work for you?

Note unless you know exactly how the address exists on the map use the minimum detail necessary then select from the options presented. For example if the map data has it as West Parker Road and you enter W Parker Rd it may not work.
  • I just cut and pasted 5945 W. Parker Rd Plano Texas into my Basecamp 4.2.5 with CNNA 2014.40 and it found it immediately. Basecamp does have some wierd search quirks but not in this case. Must be the maps you are using.
  • Be sure you do not have the global map selected. It will not find addresses. You need something like city navigator.
  • I got curious and tried to search for Plano, TX with only the global map selected and it found it. It won't find an address with the global map but it will, indeed, find the city just fine. So something else is going on as the OP stated that they could not even find the city.

I select Find Addresses and enter "Plano TX" and BaseCamp can't find the city.
Try using a comma to separate the city and state.

I just searched for Plano by entering "Plano, TX" (without the quotes, of course) and BaseCamp found the city instantly and offered several facilities within the city to show me.
  • This may be the underlying issue. I believe we have a case open for that already but I will double check. Thanks for the feedback.
  • Since TireMan9 hasn't been back, I'd say he figured out his map selection issue...

In my opinion, something should show the user what formatting (if any) is needed for an address to be found when the user is entering the address.

Programming needs to be done with uneducated users in mind. I always seemed to get the best feedback about my programming (typically databases for industrial control systems technicians) when I consistently considered the lowest common denominator. It's very easy for a programmer to forget to take the point of view of the beginning or infrequent user because the programmer is so familiar with the product being worked on.
  • We have indeed opened a case for this. Thanks again for all of the feedback.
