When I'm in the process of making a route, the route takes off through the city that I'm trying to go around. If I try the erase, it will erase everything that I just added from the last good point. How am I going to get this to stop?
Well without explaining a bit more about what you're doing I'm unsure ... but try putting a via point at an appropriate point on the route you want to go. To do so select the insert tool (looks a bit like a pencil) and move it between the points where you want to insert another one until you see a thick black line, click and you can now 'rubber band' your route. Just click along the road you'd like your route to take.
