Using BaseCamp 4.2.5.0 with WIN 8 x64 i7 3.4GHz 16GB Ram 2TB HDD:
Seeing that BirdsEye satellite imagery has recently been updated to 'v2', I decided to refresh some of my older BE imagery and see what improvements have been made (in my area).
I wanted to select all of my BE imagery (Ctrl-A), then right click 'Create BirdsEye Imagery from Selection', but alas, BC will only allow a single BE file to be selected at any given time, so i had to manually select each BE file, right click, create, go through all the steps, rename (added v2 suffix), and select send to device. Repeat 180x (give or take).
I have a 60Mbps internet connection that tests in the 40's most of the time, yet the BE download times are still quite slow, requiring several days of constant downloading to complete. I assume Garmin is throttling/limiting the transfer speed here.
Checking progress a couple times I found an error for this or that BE file stating that xxx number of tiles were not downloaded for the specific file, and asking if I want to use as is or retry downloading the missing tiles. In each scenario, I chose retry, as a BE file with missing tiles will not work for me.
Eventually, all BE files were downloaded, and were transferred to my GPSr. Or so I thought.
When I checked the specific BE imagery that were missing tiles (I kept notes), they were STILL MISSING TILES. Further more, they were transferred to my GPSr INCOMPLETE. This, after I had specifically selected do not use, retry download.
Now I have to manually go through and check each BE file (my confidence in BC has been shaken), and manually restart the download process for each BE imagery missing tiles. Except, BC will not let me! I can see in the Properties Tab for any selected BE file that xxx tiles are missing, but BC offers NO FUNCTION to continue or complete or retry the download. No 'play' or 'pause' button, etc. NOTHING.
So how do I get the missing tiles I already indicated I wanted BC to retry (when the download failed the first time)?
I have to select the (new) BE imagery file (with the v2 suffix I added), and right click > create BE imagery > etc all over again, and this time I have to name it v3, and THEN BC starts the whole process again. For EACH BE file.
This time, all tiles are acquired for all BE maps, I can delete my incomplete 'v2' BE maps and rename the correctly downloaded 'v3' to 'v2' to get where BC SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALREADY.
GARMIN: Why am I given the option to use the incomplete BE map or re-load if BC is just going to send the incomplete BE map and ignore my answer in the first place? And why no option in the BE Map Properties Tab to complete the incomplete download?
Also, why not add a 'Refresh BirdsEye Data' option?
