Newbie here, looking to find my way. I have a few questions but I will this basic one first.

Question 1:

BC starts with a very basic map with out detail. When I plug in my BMW Motorrad nav 4 I am assuming it get all the map detail from it. Great, I can do my planning etc. However, when I disconnect the device the detail goes away. I went to "maps > mapInstall" it did a scan, it found my device and said " no unlock maps found for this device"

How do I proceed?

BTW, I also have a nuvi 50 for my car.
  • Stuart,

I'm not certain (I have a zumo 660), but it is my strong impression that the Nav IV is supported by Garmin for both firmware and map updates.

That could be. It would depend on the purchasing/licensing agreement between the OEM (Garmin) and manufacturer (BMW). It would seem, from the OP, that there are some restrictions.

Best practice is to use the track to "trace" and create a new route, otherwise you tend to get too many vias and problems if the track appears not to follow the road precisely (position or map errors).

in BC can you have multiple tracks open simultaneously for the "tracing purpose?

Yes indeed. Put all of the tracks you want to use in one "List" and highlight each one and change its color under Info, if necessary, to make it easier to see.

The BMW Navigator IV comes with a lifetime update. So its possible to install the map on the computer during a map-update using Express

Download and install Garmin Express from the Garmin Site. It should find your Nav-IV, check the software and the maps, and offer to update them if necessary. It will also allow you to install the updated maps onto your computer although you have to dig a little in the software (at least on the Mac version). I just did all this on my Nav-V and it seems to work perfectly.

It is supported mostly by Garmin, i.e., software and maps. The hardware stuff comes from and you can get most of your answers from your BMW Motorrad dealer.

As to why a BMW branded device, in the case of the Nav-V it was because of the four-button cradle, the slightly larger screen, and the ability to handle tracks up to 15,000 track points along with the killer price. In my case it was cheaper than a Zumo 390 and on par with a Montana and the tech inside the box was newer than the 660/665. There are some drawbacks, though: can't do portrait in the 4-button mount for one. But it will fit the 660 mount.
