GPS & Base Camp

Newbie here, looking to find my way. I have a few questions but I will this basic one first.

Question 1:

BC starts with a very basic map with out detail. When I plug in my BMW Motorrad nav 4 I am assuming it get all the map detail from it. Great, I can do my planning etc. However, when I disconnect the device the detail goes away. I went to "maps > mapInstall" it did a scan, it found my device and said " no unlock maps found for this device"

How do I proceed?

BTW, I also have a nuvi 50 for my car.
  • If you have a nuvi 50 for your car you can install the maps from that onto your PC, I have no idea about the BMW nav 4 I'm afraid.

To install the maps from your 50 (assuming you've already updated the maps on it and you either have lifetime maps or are still within the first year) just run Express or MapUpdater, selecting the option to download the map to your PC.
  • It works the same for the Nav IV.

By the way: the purpose of MapInstall is to transfer maps from your computer to the device; not the other way around.

The nuvi 50 has lifetime map. I just fetched the new update the other day. It is 2014 update. The Nav 4 did not have any updates the map is from 2013, Any conflicts?
  • Might very well be, but if you want to install the Nav 4 map on your PC I have no idea how you might do it.

If it were me I'd download the nuvi map, use that for initial planning and then when I was ready connect the Nav 4 ... you can then check the routes on the map supplied with that and make any adjustments necessary. Of course you could simply do what I do, never use the inbuilt system and always use your nuvi as I have always found them better than any 'in built' system :)
  • The Nav IV isn't an inbuilt system; it's a BMW branded zumo 660 (with some hardware additions), meant to be used on a motorcycle (BMW ofcourse ;) ). You can't replace that with a nüvi 50...

The zumo 660/BMW Nav IV has the ability to load a route created in BaseCamp without recalculating, very useful for those that want to keep control over their routes.
However, this only works when the map that was used for creating the route is the same as the map in the device. When they differ, the device will recalculate, which might result in differences wih the original route.
So, having the same map on your computer is essential... Didn't the Nav IV come with a DVD?
  • Ah thanks ... wonder why folks just don't buy the zumo 660 :)

That is not the case 100% of the time. If you have a trick please let me know. Cause I am pulling my hair. When I ride with the bmw club, they have some really cool tracks. I save those tracks as custom route in the device. The gps will not even follow the original track. It drives me nut.

I just checked the box. It did not come with a dvd. I just got it brand new from the dealer three weeks ago.

    Thanks for your help!

you know what? I wondering that my self. and to be honest, I am leaning towards it. My bike has the hardware for the nav 4 from the factory and it is integrated right in the dash. It looks awesome and it is safe.

But I am not impressed at all.
  • Late model zumos (and therefore BMW Navs) do not come with DVDs. I am surprised your Nav IV is not eligible for an update, however. You might want to contact Garmin about that.

As for recalcs, the best advice has always been to have enough "forcing" points (vias) in your pre-planned routes that they can survive a recalc. In fact, it is smart to call for a recalc in your GPS when pre-testing a route. Also, if you set the GPS to prompt you before recalculating, that gives you the option of getting back on-route manually (look for the purple stripe) and thereby preventing any possible "damage" to your route.

Finally, you can use BaseCamp to turn tracks into routes to "replay" those BMW club routes. Best practice is to use the track to "trace" and create a new route, otherwise you tend to get too many vias and problems if the track appears not to follow the road precisely (position or map errors).

    Ride safe,

In my experience many automotive manufacturer factory installed GPS units are only supported by that manufacturer even if the actual unit is OEM'ed from someone else (e.g. Garmin). Map updates for such GPS's typically cost $$$.
