Export to TCX only exports headers (in 4.2.5)

I used export selection & chose TCX for the first time & found that I only got headers & no data. The total content of the file is quoted below

"<TrainingCenterDatabase xsi:schemaLocation="www.garmin.com/.../v2 www.garmin.com/.../TrainingCenterDatabasev2.xsd" xmlns="www.garmin.com/.../v2" xmlns:xsi="www.w3.org/.../XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:tp1="www.garmin.com/.../v1" xmlns:gpx="www.topografix.com/.../1"><Activities /></TrainingCenterDatabase>"

exporting as a GPX worked fine.

I realised that I think this has happened before when someone sent me a route, created in BaseCamp, via email last year & I found that the TCX they sent was similarly truncated but the GPX they also sent was fine.

I get the same result when exporting a route, but it gives full data if you export a track. Does the Garmin Training Center understand routes?
  • It could be that you have no timestamps in your route/track. Basecamp only exports data to tcx if timestamps are present.

I created a route by hand in BaseCamp & then exported it. I would say it is a bug - either BaseCamp shouldn't do the export if it hasn't got the info, giving a message to this effect, or it should add timestamps if the file needs them.

Not sure about the comment about Training Center understanding routes - the file quoted has never been in TC I copied it the content straight from the file using Notepad. I initially got an error in other software when I tried to open the TCX, that was what got me investigating (& reminded me of the similar problem encountered last year). TC is fine with the TCX I made by exporting a GPX & then converting it.

The TCX format does not support routes or tracks.
TCX does support activities (similar to a GPX track recorded on a device) and courses (similar to a planned GPX track or route). A TCX course usually has timestamps, though I'm not sure if they are actually required.

Yes, it would be useful if BaseCamp could convert routes or tracks to courses when exporting as TCX, adding timestamps if required. Or at least give a warning message to say it won't work.

    Yes, they are.

Ah well - there was I starting to think BaseCamp had turned into a useful program, having given it a miss since I tried it in a previous incarnation!

At least not if you want to create TCX courses prior to actually doing them!

It's not exactly rocket science, especially as BaseCamp gives you timed instructions for a handmade route, either based on the current time or a time you set manually. The online planning I had mainly been using up to now (BikeHike) seems to manage it OK.

  • JaVaWa RTWtool can convert routes & tracks to courses, and inserts timestamps automatically (based on a user defined speed) when necessary.
