Newbie Basecamp question re Oregon 600

I have a recently acquired Oregon 600 that I loaded up with free maps from GPSFileDepot.com. The maps downloaded and installed on Basecamp and I was able to load to the 600's SD card, The maps are visible on both the 600 and in Basecamp. Everything works, so far so good!

Now, today I installed Basecamp on a second PC (a laptop) and connected to the 600. I see my past routes, and I can browse to the maps on the SD card using Windows Explorer but the maps don't show up in Basecamp (on the laptop). Is this a limitation of the software - that the maps only show up on the basecamp copy they were installed to the device with? Or am I missing something subtle - like I need to reinstall the maps to Basecamp, even though they're already on the 600?

Thanks for any advice.

PS: Tried lots of searching but the only results I found were about loading maps from Basecamp to the GPSr; noting about loading maps from the GPSr to Basecamp.

Hello CB900F,

So on your original PC you have GPSFileDepot maps installed on your hard drive.
I am guessing but I think you will have to do the same thing with the laptop because the maps are not Garmin.

My only experience with BaseCamp reading maps from my device was a Garmin factory SD card with City Navigator Europe on it.
The first time I connected to BaseCamp it took over 5 minutes to load the Europe card.
After that when I connect it finds the card and loads within a few seconds.

Maybe you just need to leave the 600 and laptop connected for awhile to see if it just needs time to do what it needs to do??

This has nothing to do with the fact that the maps aren't from Garmin. Maps preinstalled on SD card will be read by BaseCamp, maps that you have put on the SD card with MapInstall (or MapSource) won't. The idea is that you already have them on your computer, so showing them twice is unnecessary.
You can download and install the maps on your laptop, but it's easier to copy them from your desktop PC to your laptop with JaVaWa GMTK (use the backup and restore functions)

Well then....where can I buy maps preinstalled on SD cards that will work in my Garmin device and are NOT made by Garmin???

Actually, it's not a matter of where the maps are from, but whether the img file has a certain byte set to 0 or 1. You can change the visibility of the map for BaseCamp with JaVaWa Device Manager. [email][email protected][/email] can do that with the maps on his Oregon, but having the maps installed on his PC/laptop is preferrable to having BC to read them from the device.

I'm not a huge fan of pre-programmed cards although I recently got one.

Those websites and SD cards look great. Do they have cards for the USA?

I agree about having the maps on the computer hard drive. They work much better and the Garmin cards have printing restrictions. At least mine does. :mad:

No they don't, but I guess there are similar products for the US...
