I`ve had enough.

Today I started going to the different sporting goods sites that sell Garmin GPS`s and left negative feed back in their Review sections.Mainly because of BaseCamp and BirdsEye.I think that if more user`s of Garmin GPS`s,that are stuck using BaseCamp would do the same, maybe Garmin would get the message, thru a drop in sales. With over 2000 pages of problems on this Forum alone, you would think Garmin would do something about it.
  • I have no problem with Basecamp, but if you feel your actions would help you then good luck. You would however be better IMHO trying to get your issues solved here, where not only are there experienced users ready to help but also the Basecamp developers.

I agree with you! I have bought my last Garmin, will never buy a unit from this company ever again!!! And before I get a response from SUSSAMB telling me it is not poor old Garmin's fault...., you are absolutely correct, it is not Garmin's fault, it is our fault for buying their products!!! But....NO MAS!!! I will join you, Pinestump, and spread the word!!!

If every person that uses BaseCamp and has repeatedly had trouble with it did the same thing, after a certain point Garmin is going to set up and take notice. And from what I can see there are only a few that say they don`t have any problems with it,and a whole lot more that do have a problem with it.

Not about how they treat someone

It`s not about their treatment to their customers. It`s about how they Graciously accept our hard earned money and in return give us a flawed product which only a select few can tolerate. So,why don`t you come down off of your high horse and and admit that it doesn`t do the job that it is intended.
  • Well as you've given us no clue about you think this 'flawed product is intended to do' that it doesn't it's impossible to comment or help.

    Very unlikely.

The people who populate these boards are a miniscule fraction of the Garmin user universe. Garmin went mainstream a decade ago, more or less, and they derive the vast majority of their sales (and profits) from the great unwashed who buy Nuvis and never connect them to anything other than their windshields. Those of us who enjoy planning journeys in great detail on a real computer in advance, then loading the route (or, sadly, collection of trip segments) into a portable device are very much in the minority.

The dumbing down of GPSs, combined with the switch from Map Source to Basecamp (which was originally meant only to serve the offroad and hiking communities) has brought us to where we are. I've learned a lot from these forums and am able to make my various Garmin products perform useful tasks as a result, as well as gaining an understanding of how we got here.

Good luck with your Magellan and/or TomTom. What sort of computer interface software do they provide? I have no clue.

    +1

This is a general trend not just a Garmin one. All our electronic toys are complicated regardless of the fact that engineers have made them easy enough to use that the average moron can operate them. That's a problem because when things go wrong, and they always do, the "great unwashed" have no clue what to do. They then expect "tech support" to solve their problem(s) when in fact most of those people just read a script from a computer screen and for the most part have little technical knowledge themselves.

I always find it ironic that in our modern technological age the average person has no clue how any of it works even in basic terms.
  • I have used the Garmin Street Pilot 2610, 465t and am now using the RV760.

My RV760 is so much better than any of the other GPS's that some of my friends are reporting about. It is way better than the 2610 and the 465t. So if you don't like the Garmin products then vote with your money and buy something else. That is the free enterprise idea.

As for MapSource and BaseCamp. I used both and liked how I can save individual files with MapSource. It works like most of the applications we have been brought up on, such as Word, Lotus, Excel, Streets & Trips and many such other applications.

But how about iTunes, Family Tree Maker and many others that are similar Database type applications and no one is griping about them.

I have taken the time to learn how to use BaseCamp. I experiment with it to see how I can use it in a way that works for me. I can keep all of my waypoints in one file and access them anytime I wish without having to load many different data files. I can make numerous routes and keep them in one place for easy access or get rid of them if I wish.

The thing I find is that people do not like change. I have used a MS Windows computer for many years. I was a deskside tech and had a moonlight business of building and repairing computers as far back as when MS DOS started out and further with Apple color computer and Commodore and Amiga. As we migrated from one to the other we all had to learn how to use each one as they changed. So as we have all seen there is ALWAYS change. if you go with it you will get better if you don't you will be left behind. Look at all the changes in MS windows from Windows for work groups to the new Windows 8 and 8.1. Lots of change.

Something else. Garmin is trying to improve how to use their GPS and are providing, for free, an application to upload from your computer to the GPS. As stated above, many never update their maps and only route from where they are to their destination on the GPS. We on this forum are in the minority because most don't want to go through the trouble to map a route and upload it.

So this is my take and I thank the persons working on BaseCamp for trying to configure BaseCamp in ways that make our life easier. They could say... Write your own application. Does TomTom provide an application like MapSource or BaseCamp??
