Problem transfering a Route to Device - Route Compatibility eror

I have a nuvi 2957LMT which has the latest full Europe map installed.
I have since purchased North America on DVD and installed it onto the nuvi.
Both maps are also installed on my PC and I have been using BaseCamp 4.2.5 to create waypoints and routes for a forthcoming USA trip.

When I attempt to transfer a Route using ‘Send to device’ from within BaseCamp, I get a Route Compatibility box open saying ‘some routes were created on a map not installed on your nuvi 2957’
‘Would you like to recalculate them for better navigation?’
When I click on the ‘More info’ button it only gives me the option to use the Europe map.

Incidentally all the waypoints transferred successfully when selected separately.
And as a test I used just two waypoints from the route to create another route. This transferred successfully. But when I recalculated the route after adding the first waypoint to the end, the error returned.

If I just answer yes and ‘recalculate for better navigation’ the transfer takes place.
And once imported, the routes are available on the nuvi.

I’ve only ever had one version of the USA map, so what is going on?
And should I be concerned about the ‘recalculating process?
  • Are both maps selected on your nuvi? If the US map isn't then that would create the error message you describe and would explain why only the Europe map is shown when you click the more info button.

    Thanks for the reply.

I did wonder about that but because I could choose a USA route on the nuvi and have it display correctly I assumed all was OK.

I have now managed to find myMaps and I have three items ticked:
    CN Europe NTU
CN North America - Western Alaska, Eastern Alaska, Cayman Islands, GR
CN North America - Pemberton, British Columbia, Ciudad de Mexico, Dis

    That doesn't look right?

The USA map is installed on the SD card - should it be displayed under Memory Card in BaseCamp?
    It never has been.

Maps in DVD format and transferred to a device (or SD card) will not be recognized by BaseCamp on the device/card. The reason is that the maps should already be on your PC.

BaseCamp will recognize pre-loaded maps (came with a unit) and supplemental ones purchased in download and pre-programmed card format.

    OK, thanks - another idiosyncrasy!

But presumably BaseCamp should recognise its existence on the nuvi when going through the transfer as explained above?

Right, I've just spent a couple of hours trying to understand how this setup works and successfully removed all user data files and ended up with a 'clean' nuvi with just the default pre-installed Europe map.
I then used MapInstall to install the North America map. I then went into myMap on the nuvi and found the following both ticked.
    CN Europe NTU
CN North America - Western Alaska, Eastern Alaska, Cayman Islands, GR

I then proceeded to repeat a transfer of a US route and encountered exactly the same Route Incompatibility error with the North America map not being available to use for recalculating.

    So now what?
  • I'm confused that you have the NA map installed but it's showing as it does

With your nuvi connected select the NA map from the nuvi, not the one installed on your PC. Have a look at the route with that map selected. Is the 'map' correctly showing compared with the NA map that's installed on your PC? It's possible that the correct map tiles weren't selected in MapInstall.
  • This is a known bug which Garmin has acknowledged in a long-ago thread, or at least I call it a bug, not sure Garmin agrees. They recommended that if you are using identical maps just ignore it by answering "no" and there should be no issues. I get this all the time and it hasn't created any problems. It comes from the fact that when you send a route and it compares PC and device maps, it doesn't see maps on the sd card (all mine are there). In fact, there is a warning that this is the case in the message, but it doesn't clarify what that means. In my experience this always happens for a route where you have added any shaping points. It may not happen for a route using only saved waypoints. Sorry you went to a lot of work for nothing...

edit -- here was the first mention of this, when BC 4.0 was introduced. I have reminded Falagar of this a couple of times since, but no change so far I think (although I am still on 4.1.2, but I haven't seen anything about it in the change log for newer versions.) https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?30152-BaseCamp-4-0-1-is-available&p=146082#post146082

Thank you, I was beginning to think this was the answer I was going to get! Not least because the map/route seemed to be fine on the nuvi.
At least I now have a greater insight into how data is kept and where on the nuvi.

Edit: And I would also call it a bug!

The strange description for the NA map is for the complete area!
The nuvi NA map isn't listed in BaseCamp presumably because it's on the Memory card as per C14_Rider's comments?
