Oregon 600

Apologies if I am using the incorrect forum. I did a hike using an Oregon 600....on the device it displayed a distance completed of 17km, but when I imported into Basecamp it displayed the distance as 14km which was the correct distance. Why this discrepancy?
  • I don’t own an Oregon 600, but in general, information observed on a device via a trip computer page or a data field is updated every second. Unless the collection of track data is set to a time interval of 1 second a track file will contain far fewer points. If you want, you can convert the elapsed time for a track into seconds and compare this number with the number of points in the saved track.

It is important to remember that GPS devices do not give true locations or elevations, DEM data on maps are not truth, nor are the locations observed on maps or Google Earth. They all contain errors.

For example, if you were to walk a straight line of true location, the track recorded on your device would not fall on the line, it would not be parallel to it, it would not be straight. Each point will contain some error, and the more points, the larger the accumulated error. This is what you are observing.

A similar thing happens with total ascent/descent. If you were walking up (or down) a hill, each false descent (or ascent) point will increase the total descent and ascent (a false level only has an affect if it is the last point). Similarly, if you are walking level, false ascents and descents will occur increasing their totals.
  • The trip computer has two odo meters, One is the "Trip Odometer" the other is "Odometer" they are reset separately from
each other. So moste likely the Odometer had 2Km still on there, and the Trip Odometer was reset to zero.....??
  • Unless things have changed on the 600 compared with previous 'recent' handhelds then the only way to reset the odometer is to do a master reset, only the trip can be reset to zero.

You may find answers to your question, and many more, here.

Do do you have selected under [Setup > Tracks > Advanced Setup > Trip Recording]?
